It's December 2017. #LeslieKean and a band of rebels have been up to no good (kidding). The #NYT goes all in. This sets off a cascade of events that continues, more or less, to the present. A #UAP committee. Congressional hearings. Investor money...

  2. Are you alone is (usually) a relatively easy question to answer...

But are WE (e.g., life on Earth) alone (in the Universe) is a bit more complex...

Enter the Drake Equation for some of your important are we alone pondering...

This web site that I put together some time ago let's the user put in ranges of values for each #DrakeEquation parameter, since we have better estimates of realistic ranges of values than precise parameter values.

Then the site uses Monte Carlo statistics to run a couple thousand solutions on the parameter ranges.

  4. Free audiobook of my previous poetry pamphlet "For the hypothetical aliens" which is an exploration of our place in the universe and our relationships both with one another and nature, explored through the twin lenses of cosmology and Sci-Fi...

    I wrote a book.

It is called "For the hypothetical aliens" and it is about our place in the universe, how we relate to nature, and what that means for us, individually.

It takes a stance somewhat centred on the dissonance between a SciFi way of looking at things vs. "realism".

It's about 40 pages of actual poetry plus the contents page, acknowledgements etc and (warning) it does contain one five page poem purporting to be about a mathematical equation...

The usual price is £5 but I am discounting them to £4 at the moment. Shipping in the UK is £1.80.

If you live elsewhere in the world we'll have to strategize because there have been problems sending pamphlets/magazines from the UK since Brexit 😢.

If you want to order one, or invite me to read from it at your poetry evening, please PM me.

  6. Thinking again about that 1-2 billion year window of when life is ideal for stuff like us wacky Humans but how many other worlds out there might just need a nudge in the right direction to make them habitable...

  7. Looking at that there en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline and it seems Multicellular life of the sort we adore only has a billion years of viability on Earth, whether a technological species fucks things up temporarily or not.
Life will be abundant in the Galaxy, complex life that we don't need microscopes to see, not so.

  8. A new study suggests that we may be relatively alone in the universe. The analysis is based on the premise that, given a group of similar Earth-like planets, life should arise on nearly all of them or none of them given the lack of differences that would cause life to arize on some of them. That would mean that intelligent, technological life should also either be very common or very rare. The lack of evidence so far to detect signals from other civilizations then led scientists to conclude that such life may therefore be rare, for any number of reasons.

  10. The unsurprising non-detection of intelligent #aliens
Life arose on Earth very early on. After a few billion years, here we are: intelligent and technologically advanced. Where's everyone else?
The #DrakeEquation, while popular to solve the #FermiParadox, has some problems.

Considering that our radio signals have only reached about 15,000 stars to date, this is a minuscule fraction when we take into account the potential number of civilizations suggested by the Drake Equation. We require significantly more time to make contact, even if we factor in the possibility of receiving a response from a civilization at a similar stage of development to ours. This extended time frame may coincide with humanity's progression to a Type II civilization on the Kardashev scale. At this point, humanity may undergo a transformation, potentially ceasing to exist as a biological species. It's worth noting that we are still quite a distance from reaching a Type I civilization, which, according to Kardashev, is characterized by a societal structure akin to communism. 🙂

  14. @sundogplanets
I set up a program that solves the #DrakeEquation. "a" solution is useless as we don't know what parameters are more accurate.

Thus, solving over thousands of combinations of parameters within user ranges gives a statistical result that has more meaning.

The equation terms are multiplied to get each reault, so high civilization numbers only happen when all params are favorable.

    Try it yourself.

While showcasing their remarkable academic talent and contributing to scientific discourse through presentations at conferences and peer-reviewed journal publications, our talented REU students also infused creativity and fun into their experience. In a nod to educational and entertaining pursuits, this year's interns collaborated on an engaging video to demystify the Drake Equation and shed light on "SETI's Plan." Enjoy!

I use a little app that I created to explore results from the #DrakeEquation. Rather than give specific results for chosen parameters, it uses parameter ranges to produce ensemble statists for thousands of solutions across the parameter ranges.

  18. We may be alone in the universe, or at least very rare. A new analysis of the Drake equation, which estimates the number of intelligent civilizations in the galaxy, suggests that the probability of finding another one is very low. This means we should cherish our planet and species as unique and precious.
