  1. I like this combination of photography and wildlife advocacy by photographer Benedek Lampert. There's a profile on his latest work in #DPReview, where he makes wildlife scenes in miniature using rubbish.

  2. #DPReview has a new article about a jaw-dropppingly great photo by Dan Zafra, in New Zealand, of the milky way, the comet SWAN, and aurora, *and* red sprites. It's insane!

The foreground looks to be the Ōmarama clay cliffs.

  3. #DPReview has a terrific article by professional nature photographer Erez Marom on the primates of Vietnam. The photos are outstanding, and include the red-shanked douc, which is doing an incredible impression of an AI-generated monkey. As the article says, "Yes, this is a real animal, not a muppet."

  4. There are a couple of knockout winning photos from New Zealand in the Royal Observatory’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition. Kavan Chay's "Crown of Light" aurora photo from Tumbledown Bay of Banks Peninsula is otherwordly.

  5. "Blackwater dive photography is arguably one of the most challenging and relatively new frontiers in the world of underwater macro photography”

This new article in #DPReview profiles Ryo Minemizu, a night time underwater macro photographer (yes, I just learned that’s a thing). The photos are extraordinary, as is the gear and effort taken.

  6. Check out these extraordinary photos taken inside musical instruments by photographer Charles Brooks. #dpreview details how Charles does this, stitching together hundreds to thousands of different photos.

“Brooks had been living in New Zealand and photographing musicians when COVID-19 happened, which quickly brought things to a halt. During that time, though, he noticed that since musicians couldn't play, they were sending off their instruments for repair. As a result, workshops were filled with fantastic instruments, sparking an idea.”

  7. That post by @cabel that I just reposted is crazy interesting. that DAK catalog and those that preceded it are essentially an enthusiast / hobby website, like #DPReview, or #CoffeeGeek or #Cocktailian, but long before the internet existed. This DAK guy and others before him ran an "enthusiast website" and sold stuff thru it, via a printed magazine catalog.

    So cool.

  8. Some good news!

DPReview.com looks forward to a new chapter with Gear Patrol: Digital Photography Review m.dpreview.com/site-news/82983
    >We’re thrilled to share the news that Gear Patrol has acquired DPReview. Gear Patrol is a natural home for the next phase of DPReview’s journey, and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish together.

  9. That's quite some news. »We’re thrilled to share the news that Gear Patrol has acquired #DPReview. […] The site will continue to operate as it was before, with all editorial coverage and site features remaining the same, and all historical content accessible.« But will it ever be the same again now that Chris Nicholls and Jordan Drake left?

  10. DPReview will live: Gear Patrol has purchased it from Amazon

“Gear Patrol is a natural home for the next phase of DPReview’s journey, and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish together,” said Everett. “Thank you for your continued support of our team and legacy. We appreciate it and can’t thank you all enough.”

  11. “Gear Patrol is a natural home for the next phase of DPReview’s journey, and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish together,” said Everett. “Thank you for your continued support of our team and legacy. We appreciate it and can’t thank you all enough.”

Everett says in his announcement that current core employees across the company’s editorial, tech, and business divisions will continue to work on the site. He also says that DPReview site features and editorial coverage won’t be impacted by the acquisition and that the website will continue to operate as it did before the purchase.

“DPReview is the internet’s original center of gravity for photography,” says Eric Yang, CEO and founder of Gear Patrol.

And that is why there was such concern amongst photographers about the site being shut down by Amazon. After 25 years of operation, it contains a vast wealth of review data and content about most new cameras launched during this period, and it was feared this was going to all be lost.

  13. This was news to me.. #Amazon's decision to shutdown #DPReview probably was the worst of all. DPReview has a wealth of information on photography and gears and much sought after place for people to get an informed opinion.

Just like any business which has just their profits in mind Amazon was trying to kill this site off. Thankfully it appears like DPReview will survive.

  14. #DPReview looks forward to a new chapter with #GearPatrol
#Photography site DPReview, known for its in-depth reviews of #camera gear and its vast archives, was to be permanently shut down by its owner, #Amazon. At the last minutes, a savior calls: Gear Patrol, a long-running #gadget site, is to purchase the site.
