  3. after watching kunal kamra's podcast (youtu.be/opbEHULi7JU) and also the @internetfreedom take on the #DPDP act (digital personal data protection), i really would like to bring some attention to the fact that this new act in #india threatens #transparency, #accountability and thereby #democracy.

the new #DPDP act allows the #government to prevent sharing certain information under the guise of protecting personal information. this violates the #RTI Act (right to information) and prevents citizens from holding the government accountable by eliminating any form of transparency in governance.

the act also prevents individuals and journalists to investigate and collect any data that the government might consider to be a violation of the act and issue penalties of up to 250 crores (which can be extended 500).

as someone who is a huge #privacy advocate, it is nice to see initiatives parallel to the #GPDR but it cannot come at the cost of government silencing public scrutiny.

  9. INDIA Bloc Seeks Repeal of RTI Blocking Provision in DPDP Act

    medianama.com/2025/04/223-indi

Some parts are good; others are mostly just another excuse to curb our almost non-existent Freedom of Speech. 🤷

    • RTI is Right to Information
    • DPDP is the Digital Personal Data Protection Act passed in the Indian Parliament.
    • INDIA is the alliance of the opposition parties in India :blobcatgiggle:

  10. Data Protection Bill does not protect us — it attacks our rights

Not only does it sound the death knell for the RTI Act, but it also makes anyone and everyone who deals with someone else's information liable for prosecution for any breach of its provisions.

  11. The Data Protection bill will enable privacy violation, not guard against it

The Bill in its current form enables massive exploitation of both blue-and white-collar workers. It allows for the state to have unchecked power and virtually makes privacy online meaningless. Anupam Guha writes.

  12. Ten Reasons Why The Digital Personal Data Protection Law Doesn't Empower Citizens

Among the ten-point list of issues this Bill doesn't address is unchecked data collection by employees, the weakening of the RTI Act, and the sanctioning of a data protection board that will be beholden to those in power.

  13. #India again releases draft bill for #dataprotection - Digital Personal Data Protection (#DPDP)

Thanks to #fediverse no algo, it got bubbled up in global timeline and I got a chance to take a look.

    Here are key takeaways :

    • Eases cross border data flows
    • The pronouns she and her has been used to describe an individual irrespective of their gender.
    • Govt entities can store data for indefinite time
    • Penalty for each breach capped at 500 crores
    • Verifiable parental consent required for processing data of a child (under 18)
