Published in 2006 - Edited in 2026 “Come Mohandas, it is time for your interview with the doctor.” “Yes, coming.” Rishi, a young assistant, dressed in a freshly starched uniform walked ahead, as he led a tired old man, with balding head, thinly covered with greying hair, to the consulting rooms. At his soft knock, a deep voice from inside replied, “Come in.” “Sir, patient No. 33.” The square room was sparsely furnished. At the far end, there was a wooden table with two […] -

MEDEA: Of all creatures that live and understand,
we women suffer most.
In the first place we must, for a vast sum,
buy a husband; what’s worse,
with him our bodies get a master.
And here’s what’s most at stake:
Did we get a man who’s good or bad?

πόσιν πρίασθαι, δεσπότην τε σώματος

Tricky #intercultural questions: When the mother of a man brings his intimate partner 3 goats, is it a #dowry or a #gift? How many animals minimum make a dowry? What if he has numerous #girlfriends, some of them #mothers of his children?

Unlike Egyptian women, women in ancient Greece “had little or no say in their own futures” (Blundell, 67). The relationship between “father-in-law and son-in-law” (Blundell, 67) was considered more important than husband and wife.
#Bridewealth, which became #dowries, was property and money used to “guarantee reasonable behavior on the part of the husband” (Blundell, 68), and help “ensure a decent standard of living” (Blundell, 68) for the wife.
It seems that when a divorce occurred, it was often initiated by the “bride’s father” (Blundell, 68), who “had a greater stake in her marriage” (Blundell, 68) because of the bridewealth / #dowry.
The ex-husband was “obligated to return the dowry to the ex-wife’s father or guardian” (Blundell, 68). Marriages existed mostly to produce male heirs who would “inherit their [father’s] property” (Blundell, 68). Female babies were often “abandoned” (Pomeroy, 157) because of their perceived liability.

My heart goes out to this woman. She deserves to live in a nation that values her as a person based on her character, not on her status as a marriageable female and the price she can fetch for a greedy and backward family. Kudos to her for standing up for women and working for change.
