I am going to use this post to give a shout-out to Portugal Green Walks, the company we used to organize our May walk in the Douro Valley hills. (I have no financial relationship with the company — just a pleased customer.) We spent a week in this region, walking on six days between cities in a loop that started and ended in Pinhão, the small town along the river bank near the lower edge of the photo. They could not have come up with a better conclusion to the walk. One of the days of our Douro Valley walk in Portugal included a section between Sabrosa and Alijo. Between them we descended into this lovely valley full of vineyards and olive groves. Despite a clear forecast we found it cold and rainy in the port of Leixões today. That drizzly rain followed us to Amarente where we had a look around for about an hour but by the time we made it to the Douro Valley and our visit to a vineyard with some lunch, wine-, and port-tasting it was as warm and sunny as we had been hoping.

Port wine tasting at Fonseca's Quinta do Panascal in the Douro Valley of Portugal on our recent vacation. We tasted their ruby, 20 yr. tawny, one specific to this vineyard, a vintage, and one of their late bottle vintages. Pretty sure this is the non-vintage ruby. I prefer tawny port, but this was my wife's fave.
