The Tex-Mex Rock 'n' Roll Architects While many associate Austin’s musical rise solely with the cosmic cowboy movement, the Sir Douglas Quintet, led by the incomparable Doug Sahm, was a primal force in creating the sonic blueprint that built the Live Music Capital of the World. Their unique amalgamation of Tex-Mex, R&B, blues, country, and psychedelic rock was a revolutionary sound that unified Austin's diverse and often divided audiences in the 1970s. 5. Sir Douglas Quintet, Live From Austin TX, 2006 on New West

Doug Sahm’s Sir Douglas Quintet recorded in 1981 but released in 2006 (on CD/DVD) / 2018 (vinyl) – live on Austin City Limits. (In 1981 that means the old Studio 6A at UT Austin, not the new Moody Theater).

This was part of a reunion tour after the quintet split up in the early 70s when Sahm put out his solo album.

My copy via a private sale is the 2018 three-sided LP version with one side etched, pressed by MPO.

  11. Today's #TuneTuesday theme is songs with cities or towns in the title or lyrics. The official hash tag is #LondonCalling but my entry contains songs that refer to another city, #Helsinki.

Helsinki and Stockholm are connected by a popular ferry line, which is nicely reflected in this song, co-written and sung by one of my favorite artists, Doug Sahm:

Sir Douglas Quintet: Meet Me In Stockholm (1984)

Two wonderful Finnish-language recordings that I really liked when they came out some 35 years ago, both with memorable lyrics:

Leevi & the Leavings: Jos Helsinki on kaunis (1989)

    Liisa Akimof: Helsinki (1990)

Unfortunately the all-time ultimate Helsinki song doesn't mention the name of the city, but here it is anyway - originally written by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent as "Beautiful In the Rain", but with superb - and completely different - Finnish-language lyrics by Juha "Junnu" Vainio:

    Fredi: Kolmatta Linjaa takaisin (1968)
