¿Sabían que el primer prototipo de ratón de computadora, presentado públicamente el 9 de diciembre de 1968, consistía en una carcasa tallada en madera de abeto con un solo botón rojo en la parte superior?
Este dispositivo fue diseñado por Douglas Engelbart y construido por el ingeniero Bill English en el Instituto de Investigación de Stanford (SRI) como parte de un sistema llamado oN-Line System (NLS). A diferencia de los modelos actuales que utilizan sensores ópticos o láseres, este mecanismo funcionaba mediante dos ruedas metálicas dispuestas perpendicularmente en la base que registraban el movimiento en los ejes X e Y sobre la superficie.
El término "mouse" fue acuñado de manera informal por los investigadores del laboratorio debido a que el cable de salida, que originalmente se ubicaba en la parte posterior del dispositivo, recordaba a la cola de un roedor. Durante la histórica exhibición conocida como "La madre de todas las demostraciones", Engelbart utilizó este periférico de madera para interactuar con hipertexto, gráficos y ventanas compartidas, sentando las bases de la interfaz gráfica de usuario moderna. El diseño original fue patentado en 1970 bajo el nombre técnico de "Indicador de posición X-Y para un sistema de pantalla", aunque la patente expiró antes de que el ratón se convirtiera en un estándar comercial masivo con la llegada de la Macintosh en 1984.
