  2. > Mr. B has risen beyond his real abilities by virtue of health, good looks, and being a good mixer. He married for money and he has done lots of other things for money. His code is not his own; it is that of his class—no worse, no better, He fits easily into whatever pattern is successful. That is his sole measure of value—success. Nazism as a minority movement would not attract him. As a movement likely to attain power, it would.

  3. > “Imagine a would-be dictator setting out to persuade a sovereign people to vote away their rights.” That idea seemed preposterous to her.. “I will get into power legally,” he said. “I will abolish this parliament and the Weimar constitution.. I will found an authority-state, from the lowest cell to the highest instance; everywhere there will be responsibility and authority above, discipline and obedience below.”

  4. > ... “No people ever recognize their dictator in advance,” she reflected in 1935. “He never stands for election on the platform of dictatorship. He always represents himself as the instrument [of] the Incorporated National Will.” Applying the lesson to the U.S., she wrote, “When our dictator turns up you can depend on it that he will be one of the boys, and he will stand for everything traditionally American.”

  5. #WhoGoesNazi read this piece, written by the first female journalist to be expelled from Nazi Germany, #DorothyThompson she sets the reader up at a gala. Each person we meet is a letter of the alphabet. Which letter would you be most similar to? Your neighbor? Brother? Auntie? (Ps. I don’t know who shared it first, but thank you. It is so helpful to understand the human nature, & background that helps create the #Nazi).
