  1. #Climatechange is directly and indirectly affecting species. The degree of these effect types differs by species and context, with indirect effects likely to be stronger for consumers of pulsed resources. Here,we investigated how higher mean air temperature related to climate change affects masting, and in parallel, how this change affects life-history traits in edible #dormice. The changed cycle in mast events resulted in a significant reduction in overall yearling survival

  6. Lots of #animals hibernate. #Hedgehogs hunker down, #dormice curl up in a ball, and #bats take to their roosts. #Hibernation occurs when animals enter a state of almost total inactivity during the winter months.
Some animals rouse themselves from hibernation for a quick snack and a toilet break, before returning to their bed. This helps the animals to keep their strength up and get rid of any waste that would otherwise soil their ‘bed’.

  10. Meet Roach’s mouse-tailed dormouse: thehabitatfoundation.org/news

One of Europe’s rarest mammals comes to Topolovgrad on October 18. On that day, The Habitat Foundation will be at the Imperial Eagle festival and present Roach’s mouse-tailed dormouse. Topolovgrad lies in the heart of Sakar, the only region where a healthy population of this dormouse still lives.

  11. Using cameras placed high in the canopy, scientists discovered that red #squirrels tend to prefer coniferous forests, while #dormice are more commonly found in beech forests. However, in mixed forests that include both tree types, both species were observed living side by side. This suggests that mixed #forests could play an important role in supporting #biodiversity.
