🍑My peach tree hasn't leafed out yet. In researching the matter, I learned about "Chill Hours." Chill hours are the accumulated hours of time spent below 45° & for fruit trees to be woken from #dormancy they require a particular amount of Chill Hours.
My #peach tree, for instance, requires 1100 #Chill Hours & this year it only got 850. Therefore, my peach tree is stuck in a semi-dormancy. This will delay growth by a couple of months. I'll eventually see leaves & fruit but they may be meager.

In the present study, we performed a thorough #evolutionary analysis of the #dormancy capabilities of 737 mammalian and 601 avian species! We also compiled a dataset of 21 ecophysiological variables per species.
We show that:
➡️ daily torpor and hibernation are parts of a continuum rather than distinct dormancy states.
➡️ many ecophysiological variables correlate systematically with dormancy, but weakly so!
➡️ hibernation (and daily torpor) likely emerged multiple times in various lineages. 3/4

#Dormancy can be classified into 2 main types: daily torpor (lasting less than 24 hours) and #hibernation (lasting longer than that, up to multiple months).
To this day, we do not know if:
❓ these two types represent evolutionarily discrete states, or if they are parts of a continuum.
❓ dormancy capabilities can be accurately predicted from species' physiological traits or #ecological strategies.
❓ hibernation evolved once in #mammals (and #birds) or multiple times independently. 2/4
