  1. 🍑My peach tree hasn't leafed out yet. In researching the matter, I learned about "Chill Hours." Chill hours are the accumulated hours of time spent below 45° & for fruit trees to be woken from #dormancy they require a particular amount of Chill Hours.

    My #peach tree, for instance, requires 1100 #Chill Hours & this year it only got 850. Therefore, my peach tree is stuck in a semi-dormancy. This will delay growth by a couple of months. I'll eventually see leaves & fruit but they may be meager.

  9. In the present study, we performed a thorough #evolutionary analysis of the #dormancy capabilities of 737 mammalian and 601 avian species! We also compiled a dataset of 21 ecophysiological variables per species.

    We show that:

    ➡️ daily torpor and hibernation are parts of a continuum rather than distinct dormancy states.

    ➡️ many ecophysiological variables correlate systematically with dormancy, but weakly so!

    ➡️ hibernation (and daily torpor) likely emerged multiple times in various lineages. 3/4

    Interesting @JAppliedEcology paper by Ensslin et al. exploring this for Digitalis lutea. They show this can apply and can negatively affect outcomes. They conclude plant material from wild populations is best suited for #restoration, but perhaps another option may be to regularly refresh ex situ cultivations with wild source material?
