Dorian Gray es un personaje de ficción, sí.
El protagonista de la única novela de Oscar Wilde, "El retrato de Dorian Gray" (1890).
Pero como ocurre con los grandes libros, la historia no nació de la nada.Detrás del mito hay realidad, obsesiones muy humanas… y consecuencias reales.
Wilde se inspiró en John Gray, un joven poeta de su círculo londinense.
Era bellísimo, carismático y consciente de ello.
Durante un tiempo incluso firmaba sus cartas como “Dorian”.
No fue el modelo moral del personaje, pero sí su rostro, su aura, esa juventud que parecía no desgastarse.La novela es, en el fondo, un pacto simbólico:
Dorian conserva su belleza intacta mientras el retrato envejece, se corrompe y carga con el peso de sus actos.
Él vive sin consecuencias visibles.
El cuadro paga el precio.Ese juego tiene un final brutal.
Tras años de excesos, manipulación y crímenes —incluido el asesinato del pintor Basil Hallward—, Dorian intenta destruir el retrato, ese espejo de su alma.
Lo apuñala.
Y entonces todo se invierte: el cuadro recupera la belleza original y en el suelo aparece el cadáver de un anciano deformado, reconocible solo por los anillos.
El tiempo y la culpa regresan de golpe.La historia no terminó en la ficción.
Cuando Wilde fue juzgado en 1895 por “indecencia grave”, "El retrato de Dorian Gray" se usó como prueba en su contra.
Fragmentos de la novela fueron leídos en el tribunal como evidencia de inmoralidad.
Wilde respondió con su famoso alegato sobre “el amor que no osa decir su nombre”.
No sirvió.
Fue condenado a dos años de trabajos forzados.
Salió enfermo, arruinado y murió en París en 1900, con solo 46 años.Curiosamente, John Gray, el hombre que inspiró a Dorian, tomó el camino opuesto.
Abandonó la vida bohemia, se convirtió al catolicismo y acabó siendo sacerdote en Edimburgo.
Pasó de símbolo de belleza decadente a una vida de retiro y fe, intentando borrar su vínculo con el personaje.Hoy, Dorian sigue entre nosotros de otra forma.
En psicología existe el llamado Síndrome de Dorian Gray (término acuñado en 2000):
una obsesión patológica por no envejecer, por la imagen, por borrar cualquier signo del paso del tiempo.
Cirugía compulsiva, dismorfia corporal, pánico a perder valor cuando la belleza falla.
El mismo vacío que Wilde retrató hace más de un siglo.Dorian Gray no era solo un villano elegante.
Era una advertencia.Porque cuando toda la identidad se apoya en el reflejo,
el día que el espejo devuelve la verdad…

Finished my #HalloweenReads read of #DorianGray. I've mentioned earlier, this is the manuscript version which was edited for Lippincott's before the later novel version. This means more homosexual undercurrents than even the original publication, but a shorter narrative (including no James Vane).
And annotations.
Now I have to have a short interlude for #mcrsf reading of Winter keep by Kristin Cashore

CW: Antisemitism in Dorian Gray
Ooof... Just gotta read past that antisemitism. It's just *bam* the theatre owner is just straight up described as a "horrible Jew" - very seedy and solicitous...
It is odd seeing something this blatantly normalised, not a poorly realised stereotype or villain, just flat out /that/
This is contrasted to the lovely, the beautiful, Sybil Vane (who is merely a blank canvas for her characters with no self in Dorian's eyes)

Basil is infatuated with Dorian's "personality" and position as muse. He thinks he's hidden that romance from Gray (has he?)... But it is Basil who is forced to introduce him to Henry
The musical I went to see reverses the order of meeting - Henry Wooton is agent/manager of Gray with Basil being bought on to produce (photographic) portraiture and becoming infatuated that way...

Anyway Chapter 1 - Henry Wooten's quips on fine form here including "there is only thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
Lots of discussion of the beautiful subject of the portrait and Basil's fear he has put too much of himself into it and a desire that Henry keep his hands off Dorian...
Only to be interrupted by the arrival of the young beauty himself...

For reference, this edition is the original typescript and handwritten amendments made by Wilde *prior to* Lippincroft's edits and first publication...
The magazine took out some queer references and even that wasn't enough for Victorian society. Wilde further revised based on those reviews for book publication and added more "moral" details to the ending.
And modern TV wants to make Basil and Dorian brothers... *Rolls eyes*
