Here in my neighbourhood, Canada Post puts the package in one of the big compartments in the community mailbox, puts the key for that compartment into my compartment, and I get the package securely, whether I'm home at the time or not. No in-the-bushes, no stolen-from-the-porch, no you-weren't-here-so-here's-a-card-to-go-pick-it-up-at-some-local-business-during-their-business-hours.

Some of the arguments about this seem to come to a false dichotomy of "Canada Post delivers to the door" or "Canada Post can't deliver it so commercial couriers get the business", where that simply isn't the case. All (or virtually all?) newly developed areas for the last almost-40 years have had community mailboxes from the start.

It's my understanding that community mailboxes now service more than half the country. They don't seem to be causing us problems, so why is it an existential crisis to convert legacy areas with to-the-door delivery to community mailboxes?

We've had a "No Soliciting" sign on our door since we bought this house...and every year we get more and more sales dicks at our door hocking shit. At this point I just figure that in 2024, mfs have no idea what "soliciting" means so they just don't even process it.

Oh hooray, door knocker season has begun in earnest. One or two a day all week. Our city has an ordinance that if you have a printed sign at the door saying no solicitors they cannot knock. Freshly printed and laminated sign has been posted!

IC1 (on the left) connects downtown to downtown, Bern to Zurich, within 57 minutes. But not only city-citizens take it. We use it to go with our big black dog from a remote valley in the swiss alps back home to our less remote but still a bit remote valley in the swiss alps. Public transportation includes highspeed trains between citys, yes. But it is way more than this.

Regarding #doortodoor rooftop #solar power salesfolk, I'm trying to decide if I should save their company name to (a) reach back out to them when we decide to go that route, or (b) studiously avoid any company that sells solar door-to-door when we decide to go that route.

The idea that I'm going to suddenly be inspired and make a decision like rooftop solar on the spur of the moment at a front door encounter is, frankly, insulting. Esp. with a painfully over-long preamble / pitch.
