I started playing Freedoom Phase 2 with Doom 4 Vanilla from the beginning and it is a banger, I have to say. D4V makes the gameplay more dynamic and the textures work really well with Freedoom's architecture which is much richer than the original one (duh). I like subtle nods to the original maps. It feels familiar yet different.
But blood instead of water doesn't stop surprising me. It is probably the biggest change in the visuals. And lack of the window texture.

I played "Hostile Takeover," map 15 of Freedoom Phase 2, with Doom 4 Vanilla and it worked together very well. I tried liking Freedoom monsters but some of them, especially low-tiers, are hard to work with. But some maps are brilliant. Complex and with rich architecture. Furthermore, GZDoom's ambient occlusion improves the immersion.
