  1. Just finished #Doom 3. Recommended!

A claustrophobic twist on the original Doom formula that, while an impressive technical showcase for its time, now feels at once repetitive and timeworn—yet fascinating and compelling.

  6. I thought it so strange one couldn't get the #BFG9000 in Delta Labs that I had to search and double check. Luckily, this is 1 of 2 places that has it 🤓

  7. Replaying #Doom3 these days. It is a really flawed game.

Enemy design and placement is downright unfair, weapons either lack punch or damage output, level design can't decide between horror atmosphere and action-packed gameplay.

But it has bright moments. Like the Enpro Plant level (the one with damaged reactor) is legit cool - action ride from start to finish.

  12. Been exploring maps to compile an inspiration gallery, and I can't get over how gorgeous this engine is. A large part of that is due to rock-solid art direction, something that id has always been at the top of their game with.

This is stock D3, too, original Linux binary, no sikk.

The only places this game really shows its age is some textures being notably low res, but that's an art asset problem, not a failure of the engine.

Being a "vintage" retro engine these days, I'd love to see people do more with id Tech 4, especially with everything that's been going on.

  17. If you have a copy of Doom 3 lingering in your vicinity, there's an Event Horizon mod of dubious quality that you can play. Personally, I love this stuff, give me the unpolished goods!

  22. It sounds like there's some kind of Unreal Engine thing happening right now, which feels like a great time to mention that Dhewm3 just had a new release earlier this month, version 1.5.5!

  36. Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil (2005: Windows) – Review

Before reading my review, I would like to outline the criteria I use for game reviews. I will refer to this game as RoE to condense my review. Today marks another return to the Doom franchise, but today's review will be Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, the first expansion for Doom 3 (2004: Windows). I recently played the "controversial" Doom 3, and honestly, I enjoyed it much more than I expected. The "controversy" (especially online) surrounding Doom 3 primarily stems from the online portion […]

  41. Doom 3 (2004: Windows) – Review

Well, well, well. It appears I have finally returned to reviewing a game in my favorite video game franchise. Today's review will focus on Doom 3, which many considered the black sheep of the Doom franchise. Of course, everyone knows during its heyday (and admittedly over the last decade) that Doom was considered the trendsetter for FPS games. Activision published Doom 3 in 2004, the same year as the original Far Cry (2004: Windows) and Half-Life 2 (2004: Windows), and a year after the […]

  46. I really liked Doom 3 when I was younger. Of course, I couldn't play it for extended periods of time because it fried my scaredy cat nerves, but I liked it nonetheless.

Jump scare survival horror was still fresh to me, and my first PC games were Doom and Hexen. So I guess the combination just worked for me.

It runs perfectly on my CachyOS desktop, but I'm starting to feel dumb for making note of that because I haven't encountered any games yet that don't. Incredibly weird timeline.
