  1. I saw some conical holes in the ground yesterday. Smoothed over, they come back pretty quickly. I tried to see what was happening; watched a bit and saw sand being thrown up in the air from beneath as the hole is constructed. It's apparently insects (antlions or doodlebugs or such) making small pits for trapping prey. Here's a video from above of dirt being flung. Stupid youtube insists on making it a short.

  2. 🚀 Welcome to the #Trembita, also known as the “people’s missile”. The prototype is #Ukraine’s 21st-century answer to the #V-1 flying bomb, or #doodlebug, the long-range missile used by Nazi Germany during the second world war against targets in south-east England.

The Ukrainian version has a range of 140km (87 miles). It can carry 25kgs of explosives, and it runs on diesel or petrol that you can buy in the local garage.

Just a little nature nostalgia about my 5th grade teacher's science demonstration and a really cool insect we used to take for granted. I miss the little critters I used to find as a kid growing up in the country.

  4. This doodlebug has been busy...my 7th sequence of sketchbook pages went out today on my Substack. I'm in the middle of publishing my "C" #sketchbook with two other sketchbooks excitedly waiting their turn to be shown to my subscribers page by page, good #drawings and bad, warts and all very unself-consciously... as the #creativeprocess goes
