CW: don't feed the trolls
The idiom "don't feed the trolls" was common in the early Internet.
I.e., it is best to just ignore them, to avoid them, and sometimes to even quarantine them.
I suspect many in modern decentralized social-media (DeSo) could benefit from this, too.
Don't feel the trolls.
Don't engage with them.
Ignore them.
Avoid them.
And, if it comes to it, quarantine them. -

I don't think anyone remembers the old internet wisdom, but you aren't supposed to feed the trolls. If someone posts something insanely stupid on the internet, there are two possibilities.
1. The person really is insanely stupid and your reaction won't change their mind.
2. The person is actually a troll and is looking for reactions because they get off on it.Either way, if you respond, you lose....
Don't feed the Trolls.

Contrary to what you may have been led to believe, there aren't significantly fewer trolls here (proportionally speaking) than on any other network.
Don't feed them.

Because suddenly, in their minds, they’ve become one of the lazy, dishonest, irresponsible people they scorn so much.
And the only solution they know - “Just pay your bills” - isn’t an option.
So what then?
They’ll have to look for help. But they’ll have to swallow a little pride first.

But what they don’t understand is that debt collectors aren’t the good guys. They don’t always get it right. And even when they do, it doesn’t mean their targets are bad people.
Because there are a million reasons someone might have for not paying back a debt.
And some day, one of those reasons might happen to the “Just pay your bills” trolls.
When it does happen, they won’t know how to handle it.

I feel sorry for them.
Whenever I talk about stopping wrongful debt collection, someone who’s got the world figured out will always offer that advice.
Because they think people fighting debt collection are the ones at fault.
As if they’re lazy, irresponsible, or even dishonest.
And the commenter is always in the morally superior position.

Have we learned nothing from 2016?
The US corporate news media constantly yelling about how Agent Orange was a clear and present danger to the neoliberal order (err... democracy) didn't stop him being elected then, and it won't work now for the same reasons. It makes him seem strong and effective, which mobilises the kinds of people who are looking for an authoritarian strongman to vote for.

There's a corollary of the #DontFeedTheTrolls principle for social media; when someone loses their temper at you, or talks down to you, that's also trolling. Don't dignify it with a reply.
Even when it's someone you normally get on well with. Even when it's someone you know in person.
Maybe use the time you would have spent wording a diplomatic reply to reach out to them in private, and ask them if they're OK. But don't throw fuel on the trashfire of their grumpy outburst. It never helps.

I no longer assume that everyone online is familiar with old school net culture. One of its old sayings is; "don't feed the trolls". The point being that most people being flippant ass-hats online do it for the attention, so if they don't get any, it's no fun for them, and they go away.

Can we please stop making a big deal out of every stupid thing #ElonMusk says or posts? With every news article, no matter if positive or negative we are just feeding his ego.

The troll thing is managable if you follow two rules:
(1) Don't feed the trolls. Ignore their comments completely.
(2) Block troll accounts. Then they can't troll you again.
Remember that these people have no lives of their own and they feed on the anger they generate by trolling. YOU ARE BETTER THAN THEY ARE. Don't feed them and then prevent them from bothering you again.

@gwynnion there's a solution for that - don't glance at Twitter. If all the sane people left that site it would be as irrelevant as Gab or Lies Central - just another radical echo chamber useful for the FBI when they round up all the domestic terrorists.
