  1. @standardebooks Please do not use Tinyurl or similar tools for encoding/shortening URL's in the #Fediverse.  Many of us do not want to be tracked on here...part of what makes the Fediverse amazing is getting from all the corporate, analytics, telemetry, and such stuff.  Also, it obfuscates the destination of the URL, make it less trustworthy. Additionally, it may be an accessibility issue (but since I'm not an expert on this topic, I'll let someone more knowledgeable chime in on this point).

This is somewhat of a best practice in the in #Fediverse.

  5. Ah, the digital age’s version of a secret handshake 🤝: the mystical and ever-elusive "Do Not Track" standard. Instead of actually respecting privacy by default, let's have users memorize an arcane spell-book 📚 of opt-out incantations for every single tool. Because who doesn't love a good scavenger hunt for privacy? 🙄🔍

  6. KQED: What Is the Point of California’s Privacy Laws if Big Tech Ignores Them?. “An independent review of Microsoft, Meta and Google web traffic in California in March found the tech companies may have violated state regulations around internet privacy. The audit, by webXray, also said that nearly 200 online advertising services ignored ‘legally defined, globally standard, opt-out signals’ […]

  12. Are you using Firefox? Changes in europe have given teeth to 'do not track' settings you can set in your browser. These settings are now likley to be honored (more often) by web apps especially those with strong international presence.

You can set the new 'Do not track' which now called 'Global privacy control' like this..

Firefox > Settings > Privacy & Security > Tell websites not to sell or share my data ✅

  13. 🇪🇺Your browser's #DoNotTrack signal is now legally binding: As of today, enabling DNT means no more personalized political ads (and no nagging consent banners about it). Keep an eye on Meta & Co. Are they complying? Report any violations! patrick-breyer.de/en/political #PoliticalAds

  19. @choam if privacy is your concern then you should use @brave. It still supports #ManifestV2, but also comes with a built-in #AdBlocker, and third party cookie blocking. Furthermore it still supports #DoNotTrack which Firefox is phasing out, so technically it's *more* private, and also MUCH faster!

  24. Now we know why Mozilla removed the #DoNotTrack feature from #Firefox. They didn't want us to opt out! (irony)

"Do Not Track: Mozilla does not track users across third-party websites to provide targeted advertising. In addition, if you have configured your browser to send a “Do Not Track” signal when accessing our websites, Mozilla will not utilize any of the tools described in the Metrics section."

  25. Glad to see #Rob from #FPF brings up #Kobler's #contextualads solution as a viable alternative to #RTB and #SurveillanceAdvertising.

Also makes a super important point about mandatory #DoNotTrack signals in browsers.

IMO this is what #Mozilla should be working towards, not making #Firefox as a data collection platform.

  27. #Firefox ditches #DoNotTrack because nobody was listening anyway
When #Firefox135 is released in February, it'll ship with one less feature: Mozilla plans to remove the Do Not Track toggle from its #Privacy and Security settings.
Few websites actually respect the option, says #Mozilla theregister.com/2024/12/12/fir

  28. One of the best lies of the anti-privacy internet is "We do not know how to react if someone's browser signals us 'Do Not Track'"—I mean, could this be more literal?

  33. @amin @Spud_Coolzip @jstatepost @VisualStuart Whilst not *the* default, you can get extensions that help, at least on Firefox.

I *think* it's "ClearURLs" tidying up YouTube (e.g. right click in side bar of recommendations) links for me. I also have "google-no-tracking-url" for Google search results.

"Do Not Track" was a web standard created in 2009, and Firefox was the first browser to adopt the feature. However, Websites, routinely ignore it, and in some cases it can actually reduce your privacy.

So Firefox is now dropping the features, and encourages users to look at other ways to protect their privacy, including Enhanced Tracking Protection, Website containers, And others that actually work.
