L‘edizione 2026 porta con sé un nuovo messaggio lanciato dall’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità:
One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.
(Una goccia di umanità. Dona sangue. Salva vite.)
Il tema mette al centro il valore umano della donazione, ricordando che dietro ogni sacca di sangue c’è un atto concreto di solidarietà e speranza.
Tra le novità più importanti di quest’anno c’è anche il ruolo dell’Italia come Paese ospitante dell’evento mondiale, con iniziative e celebrazioni internazionali previste a Roma per sensibilizzare cittadini e istituzioni sull’importanza delle donazioni periodiche. Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità (WHO)
La ricorrenza continua inoltre a richiamare l’attenzione sulla necessità di aumentare il numero dei donatori volontari, soprattutto tra i giovani. Secondo l’OMS, una partecipazione più ampia della popolazione è fondamentale per garantire scorte di sangue sicure e sufficienti per interventi chirurgici, emergenze, cure oncologiche e assistenza materna.
In questa giornata il ringraziamento va a tutti coloro che, con pochi minuti del loro tempo, regalano una possibilità in più a chi sta affrontando una battaglia per la vita. Perché, davvero, una sola goccia può fare la differenza.

I finally hit the 6 gallon mark with lifetime blood donation #48 today with the American Red Cross! It’s always been enjoyable to ride on trails and greenways for most of my trip to and from the appointment, as it relaxes me. Gallon number 7 is my next target!

Free, voluntary plasma or blood donation saves lives. It's so easy!
If you donate plasma, you will be given an infusion of saline solution in the appropriate amount to replace what you have lost. The device centrifuges the plasma and returns the blood cells, etc.
If you donate blood the amount lost is smaller so you will not be given anything to replace it; you will need to replenish your fluids yourself afterwards.
And then I get thanks and food in my department, even vegan food.

Donated 3 units of platelets today at Stanford's Blood Center. They are probably already on their way to a human who needs them over the next day or two.
Usually it's 2 units unless they have a need. The 3rd unit adds about 20-30 min overall to the collection time.

Had a routine blood donation where I get blood pulled out, spun around, platelets collected, and the leftovers returned to me. Otherwise known as a platelet donation. At one of Stanford Blood Center's locations.
Usually it's a 2 unit donation, but they asked if I had time for a third unit. Sure!
Lifetime donation #233 in the bags, and 13th for this year. My platelets will probably be put to use for a surgery or chemo patient in days, perhaps tomorrow.

Today was my first donation of Blood.
There can never be a next time if there is never a first time.
Something I have wanted to do for a long time, but struggled with a deep phobia for needles and the unknown. Today I was finally able to overcome it.
🇬🇧 Today I went to donate blood for the first time! 🩸That also means I received an answer to most of my questions about donating blood while genderqueer, on HRT and ADHD medication in Germany.
Women can donate four, men can donate six times a year over here. Since I officially carry the 'third gender' of my country and I've been on HRT for several years, they didn't initially know what to do with me.
They expressed sympathies with me on how aged and outdated their systems and protocols were – most of them were still on Windows XP or older and the software only featured 'male' and 'female' options.
They came to the conclusion that due to my long-term hormone replacement therapy, I was nowadays closer to 'biologically female' than 'biologically male', and that they'd keep me in their systems as female.
[This was somewhat funny to me. I can only imagine what a transphobe would think about the idea of medical personnel determining me as biologically female.]
Hormones were also no issue whatsoever, and the doctor told me that my 'transsexuality' that I initially put into 'pre-existing conditions' is not a medical condition but just a facet of life and therefore should not be listed there.
Taking Lisdexamfetamine (Elvanse/Vyvanse) was not an issue whatsoever. They're mostly looking out for blood-altering medication such as blood thinners, and illegal drugs.
They're trying to minimise risks, and people who take illegal drugs are way more likely to use unsanitary syringes or even unknowingly consume unknown or dangerous substances that may linger in the blood due to consuming laced drugs.
Same thing with sex: since 2023, they don't ask for sexuality anymore. Instead, I was allowed to have 'up to and including 2' sexual partners within the past four months, or 'up to 1' sexual partner with who I practised anal. No questions about sexual orientation appeared.

I'm unable to donate blood as when one of my medications is given in huge doses to pregnant rats it can cause birth defects.
Personally I'd rather my blood was given to humans, not rats.
Successfully completed lifetime blood donation #44 to the American Red Cross today before picking up some groceries (shortage of ice cream in my freezer is a true emergency). Time to rest and recover (and have some ice cream)!
