  1. @noamzoam

What a lovely letter: informative, rich in connections, kind.

My love for this kind & gentle man of genius is unbounded.

  2. @blp @epu I would love to meet #DonaldKnuth and am a huge fan of his sorting algorithm (and apply it IRL all the time, not just programmatically).

  3. Two #AI-related events over the past week — the #Chardet licensing controversy and legendary computer scientist #DonKnuth's shock over AI helping discover a theorem for a problem he'd not yet solved — demand a reckoning: precisely how creative is AI? reviews.ofb.biz/sa1401

  4. #DonaldKnuth beaten by #AI.

    > Shock! Shock! I learned yesterday that an open problem I’d been working on for several weeks had just been solved by Claude Opus 4.6 [...] It seems that I’ll have to revise my opinions about “generative AI” one of these days. What a joy it is to learn not only that my conjecture has a nice solution but also to celebrate this dramatic advance in automatic deduction and creative problem solving.

  5. A quotation from Donald Knuth

Science is what we understand well enough to explain to a computer. Art is everything else we do.

Donald E. Knuth (b. 1938) American computer scientist, mathematician, academic
Essay (1996), “Foreword” to Marko Petkovsek, Herbert Wilf and Doron Zeilberger, A = B (1996)

  6. "[T]he designer of a new system must not only be the implementor and the first large-scale user; the designer should also write the first user manual...If I had not participated fully in all these activities, literally hundreds of improvements would never have been made, because I would never have thought of them or perceived why they were important."

Oh, what a wonderful background narrative by the man Aho himself, thank you for the link.

And it's good to see Donald Knuth coming up, with his LALR algorithm and his always-pertinent practice-theory maxim.

Yes, Donald Knuth is a hero and a true renaissance man, and his TeX is an unsurpased achievement, a tool of lasting value.

Back in 1996 I took a few months off for an in-depth study of Knuth's TeX: tokens and boxes and output routines and all. I used plain TeX to write a flexible little macro package for myself, with a minimalist input syntax, set up for my own writing, tailored to my own writing needs.

I still use that same package today, 30 years later, unchanged except for project-specific adjustments. All the materials I give to my students are written in that package, all my papers. A stable writing framework for a lifetime. Few other systems have such stability and power. Thank you, Donald Knuth.

  9. @0xabad1dea I can not imagine a world in which the foundational works of #DonaldKnuth ever become irrelevant.

[Not sure it counts as "tech", but: ]

    Donald Knuth's TeX typesetting system.

A rare case where a design fully meets the demands of a problem, once and for all.

Unchanged for nearly five decades, forever fresh and alive. Because it is right.

    Gives me joy every day.

  13. "#ComputerModern is the family of typefaces developed by #DonaldKnuth for #TeX. It's so good-looking that some scientists do research just so they can write it up in Computer Modern.

The cm-unicode project compiles versions of the Computer Modern fonts in a few formats, including TTF. I've run them through codeandmore's @ font-face kit generator and FontSquirrel to get all the weird formats that the various browsers insist on. This page shows off each typeface, with links to packages containing everything you need to use them in your own pages."

  14. One of my favourite things from #DonaldKnuth was his up-arrow notation, a way to represent extremely huge numbers using hyperoperations. For example:

    • a↑b is exponentiation,
    • a↑↑b is tetration (a exponentiated by itself b times)
    • a↑↑↑b is pentation (a tetrated by itself b times) etc.

I found out about this notation while learning about Graham's Number, a number that's so huge it can't fit in the observable universe :MOULE_Ha:

  16. @catselbow #DonaldKnuth and his forever-being-written books are amazing and helpful for so many reasons. I treasure my copies. #math #programming
