  1. CW: spoilers for season 2 of Heaven Official's Blessing anime

How could they end it with no kiss?! Why would they do this to me?!

    I needed that kiss.

    That was important. :angwy:

  2. CW: Lupin (2021) Season 1 Episodes 1&2 review and spoilers

I honestly really like this series! I think it works great with Omar Sy as the lead actor and it's great that he was also a producer! I absolutely love the idea of the gentleman thief. Compliment sandwich that is mostly compliment :domo_attempt1:

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I think it's fun spotting the little things done to throw off the cops and throw off other random much lower level thieves.

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I also love that it's in French. I was chatting with @scremlin and we were talking about how we don't get a lot of French media (translated into English and then marketed to Americans) staring Black people and so this series is important because it centers Black lives and we love that.

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I like that Lupin is a genius thief with a purpose. I like that he's not just stealing to prove he can steal the "biggest most expensive thing" or something. I think that makes him far more interesting. It gives a greater depth to the plot that I enjoy.

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I like how sweet Lupin's dad was to him, and I like how sweet Lupin is to his kid. I like seeing examples of kind fathers in general. I just like non-toxic masculinity. I'm not interested in another show where a guy tells his kid to "man up" or whatever. I want a gentle and education focused male parent, and this scratches that itch.

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I also love the touching scenes between Lupin and his best friend. I think it's sweet that they hug and his best friend holds his face kindly. I know this is partly just, culture that isn't... American is more OK with men touching their friends affectionately, but it's just really nice to see. It's healing.

:owl_house_king_upset: I don't like the Pellegrinis. I think they're all uniquely racist and shitty in their own special way. I think the daughter's "Black people can't swim, but if you prove it, I'll kiss you" is gross. I think the father is suss and overtly racist, and I think the wife is shitty and racist for not defending Lupin's father. I hope they all get theirs, but it looks like they're about to set it up so just the white man is the problem and the rich white women who benefit from him are just innocent victims, but like, at every opportunity, they were also intent on seeing Black men rotting in prison. Fuck them. Being a woman doesn't excuse you from the racist shit your father or husband does. That's still your job to openly object to, and also... cut that fucker out of your life, but you like money and power more than you give a fuck about Black people. I hate that.

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I do like how goofily shit the cops and security guards are painted though. Like they're racist, which I obviously hate, but they're also comically incompetent and terrible at their jobs. I love that. Paint cops as the racist, incompetent slobs they are and make them look awful.

  3. CW: Star trek: strange new worlds episode 1 review and spoilers

🥪 I do not like that captain. He is such a stale military commander type and not at all interesting or fun in anyway.

Middle aged white men are boring. And creepy.

On that note, it would have been really nice to have a Black person as a main star of the show captain. I don't think we've done that. We should do that.

🥪 Oh, and it was Wierd that they immediately started with Spok being a neglectful partner that fucks. That was weird. Just a weird vibe.

:blue_heart_sparkles: I liked the med bay/genetic testing crew. I thought they had chemistry.

Overall rating: It felt... meh. It's hard to see why I would keep watching.

  4. CW: Interview with the Vampire TV series S01, E01 review, spoilers, nsfw txt

    It. Is. Compliment. 🥪 Time!

So, I watched the first 3 episodes, but I'll go episode by episode on my thoughts. Let's start with the 1st.

:bg3_astarion_excited: I'm so happy there's Black people in this rendition, and that it actually stars a Black vampire. New Orleans would be nothing without the Black people that built the city and culture you love. The food? The art? The music? The festivities? You have all of that because of Black people and it's a goddamn shame that they weren't featured in the original movie, so great on the directors and producers (including Anne Rice!) for making up for that.

:bg3_astarion_humph: Lestat is such a weird white European man. He's not sexy at all in the 1st episode and boo for that. Like, I know vampires are predators and actually not nice and there's a lot of complicated bad shit they do with regards to age gaps (and I do condemn those and talk about them a lot), but sexy man that drinks my blood was like my one guilty pleasure in media that is so hard to drop- but Lestat's just... weird lol I think this gets better in the next episodes, but first episode just feels so weird with regards to his character. Maybe it's partially that I hate his initial outfits and hair dresser? I dunno, fashion nerds, please chime in on episode 1 Lestat wardrobe, hair, and makeup :goth_nails:

:bg3_astarion_excited: It's so queer! I have never seen anything in vampire TV shows or movies that featured queer Black vampires. I like that they don't make it as homophobic as you might think too. Like there's only a couple people that make it weird, and they're not like, being hunted for being gay. It's nice. It's still messy af, but a queer relationship regardless.

:bg3_astarion_humph: I know why Lestat kills ppl that stand in the way of his love, but I still think he's just such a dick for messing with Louis's family like he did. Killing off Louis's brother (allegedly) and his main friend and sexual partner was pretty low. That was unnecessary & if you're honestly just looking to be a vampire w/ another vampire for eternity, why not just be nice to his family until they die for sake of his respect. Like, my guy, what's up?

:bg3_astarion_excited: Louis is hot enough to make up for how fuckin' weird Lestat is. I love his present day look in the 1st episode too. I think he looks great in all his suits. Seriously his fashion is literally always strong. I love his colorful suits too! I liked him enough to graduate him to the jellyfin Shows thumbnail. Here, you can also have a poorly cut out Louis de Pointe du Lac for your collection :tada_but_goth:

  5. CW: murderbot (tv show) season 1 thoughts (spoilers)

So, @scremlin and I finally finished watching murderbot. You know what that means? Compliment sandwich time! (note: I haven't read the books)

    • :ms_robot_heart: I loved the diversity rep. It was nice to see people of color as well as queer and poly rep and I felt like everyone displayed great acting skills too!

    • :ms_robot_error: As an autistic person myself, I don't like how people have latched onto to murderbot itself as autistic rep. I don't like the idea of categorizing autistic people as inhuman (I feel the same about ace people being categorized as such). I think the augmented human made more sense as an autistic person.

    • :ms_robot_heart: I really like how Dr. Mensah was portrayed. I like that she was a strong and kind Black woman, but that she had panic attacks and showed real struggles instead of being painted unrealistically strong. I like her and I liked the way she ran her team and just generally how she was written.

    • :ms_robot_error: I hated the ending! I didn't like that murderbot didn't even say goodbye to his favorite human crew :owl_house_king_upset: I wanted more story with the crew. I thought the crew was well written and fun. I felt like that was selfish to not at least give their planet a try or say, "hey look, I gotta do me". Like you're free to do you, but these people just moved heaven and earth to keep you safe. Don't be a dick.

    • :ms_robot_heart: I loved the fashion, clutter, and background media. I thought they did a lovely job from the perspective of the set, wardrobe and TV in TV. It was great.

I honestly liked it all enough that I'm considering looking up the audio books to purchase and listen to, because I do want more of the story, and that's saying something, because that's a very rare feeling for me.

Overall, I'd give a 7/10. Give it a watch. Let me know your thoughts!

  6. CW: The Owl House: season 1 spoilers and review

Ok, so @scremlin and I finished the first and second season over the past few days and I have thoughts before we watch the third. First lets talk about my final feelings on season 1! (I need an emoji for "compliment sandwich")

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: The fight scenes are so impressively good? Like you're not really expecting how good the magical fights are. Both scremlin and I agreed that they also did a really good job leveling the characters at a good pace, and not letting the power levels get too out of control, which is part of what makes the fights really fun to watch, but also just the creativity of Eda and Luz are so good, especially when it comes to fights. For instance, I loved how owl-based Eda's fight with her sister is. The giant owl that could sprout more was really neat.

:owl_house_king_upset: Hooty literally never gets less awful. Every episode he's in is slightly more annoying. I would honestly love a cut of the show where he's just dubbed over with either cute little owlet noises, or just entirely quiet. This is a hooty hate zone.

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I loved how they illustrated fears in Grom Night and I loved Luz’s outfit and just generally Amity’s redemption arc. Normally I dislike redemption arcs because they’re done with characters that do something way more horrific than bullying, but I think the show over all does a really good job of second chances while maintaining healthy boundaries.

:owl_house_king_upset: Honestly one thing that bothered me, and it was small, was the shiny things distraction joke. I dislike that as low brow ADHD joke. Distractions can be fun, yes, but they’re also really painful and frustrating. ADHD can be beautiful, but I dislike when it’s reduced to “oooo shiny thing” or “oh look a butterfly” and it makes the character seem a bit simple. I don’t like that they did this with Eda, because it didn’t even make sense for an Owl because they’re not known for collecting shiny things. It would have made more sense if she was distracted by a mouse or a particularly interesting twig for her nest.

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: The animation really is just so good. The frame rate is pretty high and no matter where you stop, there’s a great screenshot waiting to be had. I will likely do a screenshot thread of images, or maybe just a folder of all the many wallpapers I now have 😅

:owl_house_king_upset: King was a little annoying and stereotypical "small man with inferiority complex" at first.

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I felt like they did a good job developing characters. There's some spotty writing, but overall it's really good!

  7. I've been watching the first season of The Owl House and it's so cute and good even though it's disney and I typically hate disney! (I almost forgive Disney for Phineas and Ferb.. almost)

    Compliment sandwich time!

Positive: I love latino rep! Luz is so cute and well styled. I love their outfit so much and I like that they basically have Kipo energy. They're perfect and I love their love of King as well.

Negative: Good god, I hate hooty so much. He has that awful mickey mouse voice, but the person doing it sounds like they're doing it wrong and hurting their voice. I hate when men do that voice. It's incredibly annoying and not funny.

Positive: Eda didn't fall too hard into a trap of useless parent. I like Eda. She is sweet and incredibly OP.

    Negative: I really hate hooty.

Positive: It gets so queer and precious. My little gay heart... :blobhaj_plead: If you're into cute little queer cartoons, this is a slow build but worth it.

I will update my compliment sandwich thread when I finish this season :owl_house_eda_thinking:

  8. CW: Love on the Spectrum spoilers (season 1), discussion of ableism

I loved a few of the people on the show, but one that hurt a lot to watch was Dani because she felt very close to home.

I loved that she had a huge passion for animation and was essentially collecting certificates from degrees to awards. That strikes somewhere deep to find someone else be like, "oh, you just need to see that I can do x to see me as valid. OK, I will acquire proof that I can do x". It hits harder when you remember the sexism in western society that keeps women from reaching certain goals, and that she has pushed past much of that, in addition to combating social queue bullshit we all have to put up with. It touched me that she was an artist and she cared so deeply for her animation and teaching others to do it as well. I love that she wanted to help others pursue the same passion!

It hurt a lot to see her boundaries violated by her second date with Soloman, because it made her dislike him, and she then told herself that it was solely due to him not having moved forward enough with his degrees, which is classist and ablest. I think more than anything, she felt frustrated with her boundaries being violated and that would have been something to bring up specifically with Soloman instead of telling him it was because he didn't have his life together. He did have his life together.

It also hurt a lot to see Dani recount breaking it off with Soloman because she said "business women don't cry" and I just wanted so badly to sit with her and say, "No, no, no. Business women are allowed to cry, and your dating life is not your business, and if you want a partner that is also your business partner, you both need to accept that you play different roles at different times. You can be a colleague in one moment and a romantic partner in the next and that is okay and normal. During the day, you can work on your pitch and during the evening, you can go out to dinner and compliment each other and smooch."

It's her choice to not pursue Soloman, and him disrespecting her boundaries is a fine reason to not consider a third date, but I worry a lot about her not processing that this is the reason she felt weird the next day. I also worry that her standards are a bit classist, as not everyone can even afford to even get a single degree, but it doesn't make you less of an artist.

I just want the best for Dani. I hope she remembers that business women can cry too.
