  3. CW: Lupin (2021) Season 1 Episodes 1&2 review and spoilers

I honestly really like this series! I think it works great with Omar Sy as the lead actor and it's great that he was also a producer! I absolutely love the idea of the gentleman thief. Compliment sandwich that is mostly compliment :domo_attempt1:

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I think it's fun spotting the little things done to throw off the cops and throw off other random much lower level thieves.

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I also love that it's in French. I was chatting with @scremlin and we were talking about how we don't get a lot of French media (translated into English and then marketed to Americans) staring Black people and so this series is important because it centers Black lives and we love that.

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I like that Lupin is a genius thief with a purpose. I like that he's not just stealing to prove he can steal the "biggest most expensive thing" or something. I think that makes him far more interesting. It gives a greater depth to the plot that I enjoy.

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I like how sweet Lupin's dad was to him, and I like how sweet Lupin is to his kid. I like seeing examples of kind fathers in general. I just like non-toxic masculinity. I'm not interested in another show where a guy tells his kid to "man up" or whatever. I want a gentle and education focused male parent, and this scratches that itch.

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I also love the touching scenes between Lupin and his best friend. I think it's sweet that they hug and his best friend holds his face kindly. I know this is partly just, culture that isn't... American is more OK with men touching their friends affectionately, but it's just really nice to see. It's healing.

:owl_house_king_upset: I don't like the Pellegrinis. I think they're all uniquely racist and shitty in their own special way. I think the daughter's "Black people can't swim, but if you prove it, I'll kiss you" is gross. I think the father is suss and overtly racist, and I think the wife is shitty and racist for not defending Lupin's father. I hope they all get theirs, but it looks like they're about to set it up so just the white man is the problem and the rich white women who benefit from him are just innocent victims, but like, at every opportunity, they were also intent on seeing Black men rotting in prison. Fuck them. Being a woman doesn't excuse you from the racist shit your father or husband does. That's still your job to openly object to, and also... cut that fucker out of your life, but you like money and power more than you give a fuck about Black people. I hate that.

:owl_house_king_thumbs_up: I do like how goofily shit the cops and security guards are painted though. Like they're racist, which I obviously hate, but they're also comically incompetent and terrible at their jobs. I love that. Paint cops as the racist, incompetent slobs they are and make them look awful.

  4. CW: re: Interview with the Vampire S01 E07 review, spoilers, severely abusive relationship

    What a fuckin' finale!

:bg3_astarion_excited: I love that I was right about Rashid being a vampire (who we now know as Armand)! I love that he's seemingly legit a devout muslim too! Great rep! Very cool! Also love his fashion choices in present day. He just looks so sleek and goth and great. I hope the kids appreciate the goth cult classic this will become. The fashion has been so :chef_kiss:

🩸 I think Claudia's plan is interesting and I like the idea of being able to influence vampires in general by your diet, drug usage, and literally poisoning yourself. Just some really cool concepts here.

:bg3_astarion_smile: I know Lestat is evil but I am such a sucker for when Louis and him are doing well. I like how they play and how sexually. I also loved their last dance. I thought it was cute. Also just loved both their outfits at the ball.

:bg3_astarion_humph: I know Antoinette is also evil at this point, but like, I liked her. I loved her spy fashion and infiltrating the ball. I feel bad for her. Her death was also depressing. I'm sad that she wasn't given the chances the others were when they fucked up. I really feel like this show hates poly people and consider people like Antoinette "home wreckers" so they get offed or hurt in some way that feels just... so cold. Fuck being an "ethical slut". Antoinette's only sin was trying to kill Claudia, and even then, it was because Claudia was trying to kill her boyfriend. Like, think about Antoinette. She's being abused by Lestat, her boyfriend, who literally cut off her finger. She probably doesn't know what Lestat did to Louis. She just sees this other girl out to kill Lestat. I feel like she's still not in the wrong here. Team Antoinette solidarity.

🩸 I think Claudia and Lestat are just too close. I get that they've trauma bonded a lot, but I still think they don't have a very healthy relationship. They're too protective of each other. They're too attached. I understand why, but I still don't love it.

🩸 I like that Lestat will be back! I know he's awful, but I want to see what brand of terrible we get next!

:bg3_astarion_excited: just another quick shout out to how cool Armand is. I am so excited for more of his story!

Overall, I think the season finale kicked ass. I really liked the show. It was like... a lot, like a lot a a lot, but it had it's charm. The sets and wardrobe were gorgeous. The acting was lovely. It was very queer. It doesn't pass the Bechtel test, but then again, it's so gay, I'm giving it a pass. I'll just have to watch First Kill to make up for this :3

  5. CW: re: Interview with the Vampire S01 E06 review, spoilers, severely abusive relationship

:bg3_astarion_smile: I thought it was sweet that Claudia helped Louis get better.

🩸 I think Claudia is a little... cold now though? Like, I understand that after being hurt the way she was, why she might be acting as she does. It may feel good to care and nurture for someone when you're trying not to focus on your own trauma, but you might also still be numb to some extent. It's also reasonable that she's protective of Louis because Lestat keeps trying to pop into their lives again.

:bg3_astarion_excited: It was toxic as Hell, but when Louis confronts Lestat in bed with Antoinette, the beginning of that sex scene was great, because you never see Louis in an aggressive role with Lestat.

:bg3_astarion_humph: pretty horrifying that Lestat drags Claudia back. I really think that was weird. I think Lestat should have just let her go or even just suggested the Louis and him join her, but live separately. What he did instead was horrifying.

🩸 So, from a poly perspective, I kind of feel bad for Antoinette. I've been the third a couple times, and it's always awkward because you're often put aside for the original relationship and if you're really lonely and not able to date again just yet, you're just kind stuck in the middle of all of it. I dunno. This show isn't a healthy poly setup, but I also don't really understand the monogamous if I'm gonna be real. Like, once you know someone else is also significant to your partner, the idea of ordering that someone else dead to prove your love sounds horrifying. I dunno. Feel bad for Antoinette. She didn't really deserve to get wrapped up in all of this.

:bg3_astarion_excited: very excited for more about Rashid. Also, I really like Daniel Molloy as a young journalist. I like the vibe. I can feel what it would be, especially having been in San Francisco a number of times after living in silicon valley for a little over half a decade. It's fun seeing retro San Francisco re-imagined.

A rough episode indeed. I kind of understand everyone's perspective (except Lestat's perspective towards Claudia in the end), but I don't really like it. They're doing a great job at social horror more than anything this episode.

  6. CW: re: Interview with the Vampire TV series S01 E05 review, spoilers, severely violent relationship, rape

    Season 1. Episode 5.

    First of all.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! THAT WAS SO MUCH! :yikes:

Like, jfc. Horrifying. :oof: Fuck, man...

    Ok, let's get this sandwich...

:bg3_astarion_excited: Claudia was much more tolerable towards the middle and end of the episode. She becomes way less over acted and much more rationale and thoughtful.

:neocat_scream: That sure was some horrible fucking domestic violence. That was some awful abuse that Lestat dealt to Louis at the end. Like omfg.

:bg3_astarion_excited: I did love the opening scene where Louis is drinking Rashid's blood. I like that Rashid eats things to make his blood taste sweet for Louis. I thought that was a nice touch. It does show some level of love.

:bg3_astarion_humph: I don't think it was appropriate for Louis to chase after Claudia for years. That's creepy parent behavior. I don't like it.

🩸 I honestly think it was right of Daniel Molloy to request to read the whole diary and also to make it clear that wanting this story told, meant that it had to complete. I know rape is a horrible thing, but if you want to tell someone's story accurately, you need to know the details, if for nothing else than how she escaped.

:bg3_astarion_humph: inflaming Daniel's parkinsons was horrible abuse and not okay. I don't like that Louis is unable to control his temper. I think it was fair for Daniel to slap him after that. 🤷

🩸 Why can't Claudia turn people?

:bg3_astarion_humph: I think Louis should have just left Lestat earlier. It doesn't excuse what Lestat does to Louis, but also ultimately changing Claudia just wasn't a good idea in the first place. He should have just left his marriage. It seems like that would have actually worked, since Lestat already had an interest in someone else.

🩸 Why didn't Lestat just turn Antoinette? Like, why keep trying with Louis? His heart wasn't in it and that was clear. You have another lover right there that you clearly love or you wouldn't keep her around so many years.

This episode was a lot and I can't say I liked it, but it began tying up some loose ends.

I still have a bunch of questions though:

    • Who is Lestat's maker though?
    • What happened to the rapist vampire?
    • Is Antoinette also a vampire at this point?
    • Where did Rashid come from?
    • How is Louis so bad at controlling his anger with as old as he is? Like, damn, I know you were abused but it's been like decades. You could have gone to several therapists for years by now. Like, I dunno, checkout betterhelp.com or something.

I'm interested in what happens next, but they better not make this incestuous!

  7. CW: re: Interview with the Vampire TV series S01 E04 review, spoilers, abusive relationships, pedophilia discussion

We've made it to episode 4 which means we've introduced Claudia.

I should be upfront: I didn't like Claudia in the movie, and I generally dislike the adult in child body archetype whether it be for low brow comedy, for instance Stewie from Family Guy, or more complex story lines, like that of iwtv. Both leave a bad taste for me, because it normalizes seeing children as adults, and that almost always leads to sex and then we have normalized pedophilia, and I fucking hate that.

With that out of the way...

:bg3_astarion_humph: Claudia's actress is over-acting to the point of being a bit obnoxious. I know part of this is that the actress herself is not actually a child, but in her like 20's at the time of shooting, so they're having her ham it up a bit, but she's just so much. There's a lot crammed into every minute she's on screen. I'm thus far not loving her character.

:bg3_astarion_smile: I did however love the cute little family montage of Lestat, Louis, and Claudia just having a nice time being a sweet little vampire family. I like that they went to see vampire movies and laughed together. I like that they did nice things for her on her birthday. I just loved their cute little gay family.

:bg3_astarion_excited: I love that Lestat goes into Louis's coffin at night and they try to fuck quietly. I thought that was also cute.

:bg3_astarion_humph: Lestat was awful to Claudia when she killed her little boyfriend. He was truly awful to her in her moment of sadness.

:bg3_astarion_excited: in present time, I just wanna say I have absolutely loved the building in Dubai that Louis lives in. I love the internal design and architectuur. It's just such a great vampire hang out.

🩸 I am so interested in Rashid! I like that he's Muslim and still seemingly in love with Louis. I don't think I've seen any Muslim vampire content yet. I want him to talk about how his faith plays along side his love of Louis. I'm interested!

:bg3_astarion_excited: Louis's fashion continues to be the talk of my household. That man is dressed so well. I loved both his present day and past outfits. Seriously, the people who did his wardrobe did it with love and care. Looking forward to fashion channels reviewing it :goth_nails:

🩸 I think Daniel Molloy is a little douchey sometimes. I know he's valid in trying to keep distance given that Louis half-attempted to kill him in the past, but taking it out on Rashid feels cruel. I like that he's been kind of helping Louis to realize the abuse in his past relationship with Lestat though. That's healthy. Male therapy is good. Positive.
