Fall always feels like this. One day you’re BBQing outside in the sun wearing a t-shirt, then BOOM, pumpkin season has already given way to Christmas prep.

There’s something almost traumatic about it, every single year, as the warmth and light is ripped away from you and you plunge into cold and darkness.

Was thinking of Dog Days of Summer which seems to have forgotten us here in the northeast 😆 And how it came to be a phrase... "When Sirius would appear in the sky just before the sun, near the end of July, that marked the beginning of the very hottest days of the year. The Romans referred to this period as "dies caniculares" or "days of the dog star," which was eventually translated as just "dog days."

Dang it was warm outside today in Sunnyvale.

At one point my phone (which gets data via the internet from local sources) reported 100 degrees F (37.7 C) but my new outside thermometer read only 99.

I closed every window and door in the house and ran the air conditioner, keeping the room I was in below 77 F (25 C).

12,000 plus meters row done, I burned almost 1000 calories, had mango nectar, and tons of water, and a much needed shower. What this amounts to equals over half of the 40,000 meters of the #DogDaysOfSummer challenge by #Concept2 finished. Every week in August raises your required rowing 10,000 meters, week 1 beginning at 10, week 2 was 20,000, and onward. My plan is to finish all of it by tomorrow night, and since I now have only 17,000 and change left to do, this should be cake. Night night all.

In the past it was believed that during doyō periods Dokōjin (土公神), god of soil & earth, resided in the ground...thus it was unlucky to do anything that disturbed the soil, including farming & building work.
Starting a new venture (whether hobby or work) was also ill advised.

There was a general belief that it was easy to get sick during the transitional period between seasons (especially summer), and so resting during doyō was important.

Narumi Sekihan's (鳴海餅本店) 'unagi-manju' (うなぎ万寿) is an adorable alternative to gobbling up real Japanese eel (an endangered species).
