Some photographs justify themselves before you look through the viewfinder. A drag queen in full costume riding pillion on a Harley through Brunswick Street during Brisbane Pride is one of those. The composition, the colour, the sheer unexpectedness all land together.
I had two frames. The first was soft. The second was this.

  2. The motorcycle contingent at Brisbane Pride is one of those parade segments that works photographically before you've made a single decision. Leather, chrome, rainbow fabric — the visual argument is already there.
What I didn't plan for was the drag queen in a full floral helmet arrangement riding pillion. That detail changed a competent frame into something I actually wanted to keep.

After hours of candlelight and speeches and a memorial wall covered in faces, the children started dancing in front of a stage that read 'Welcome Here.' No one arranged the frame. I am wary of images that feel too easy, but this one I trust — none of it was set up. It was the most accurate single image I made that night, because the vigil was not asking for grief to be the last word.

A woman in a patchwork coat stood at the memorial wall — photographs and children's drawings — and pressed her palm against one of the faces. I made two frames and moved away without asking anything. There are moments in documentary work where requesting information would contaminate the thing you are trying to preserve. The gesture was complete without explanation.

A golden retriever crossing first, a queue waiting for the next ride, and that late-afternoon sun cutting through the trees like it has somewhere better to be.
Where would you rather be in this frame — walking the dog or waiting for the bus?
