Full disclosure: I don’t much like Doctor Who Xmas specials (generally too soppy), and I often find introductory episodes for a new Doctor a bit disappointing.

So I was a little underwhelmed by this episode from the point of view of plot, while being very impressed with Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson as the Doctor and Ruby Sunday.

To get the latter out of the way first: Gatwa is obviously brilliant casting, with loads of charisma and energy. Gibson is good too... though she did distinctly remind me of Rose from 2005, down to her signing on as companion due to the presence of a time machine that can presumably address her family issues.

The goblins also reminded me of something I didn't always like about Russell T Davies' first stint at showrunner: the feeling that he'd rather be writing a fantasy show like Buffy than a science fiction show (count the number of 'mystical clouds' in those early episodes: there's a lot). I really don't want even more fantasy in my DW, but I think that's where we're going.

I'm also not sure that paying a homage to both Labyrinth and Jabba the Hutt in one episode is the fresh new writing we were expecting. But oh well - first episodes of a Doctor are hard to pull off perfectly, they have so much to do.

Plot aside, the supporting characters around Ruby are great - her immediate family, plus the mysterious Mrs Flood (did you watch right through to her wink to the camera?). Who is she - the Master, River Song, someone else? She seems to know more than you might expect from a random neighbour.

Back to Gatwa - that scene of him dancing at the nightclub in kilt was revelatory. Have we ever seen the Doctor so relaxed in such a setting? It does seem like a fresh start in that way. Eyes to the future!

All three specials were fantastic, I’m truly happy to have RTD back at the helm. While Wild Blue Yonder was great on its own it was a let down as an anniversary episode. There was absolutely nothing that feature or celebrated the history of the show. The Star Beast was an adaptation of an 80s comic and the Giggle featured one of the shows earliest villains. Still a success though.

Anyone else highly relate to Doctor 14's exhaustion and stress at the end of The Giggle? I felt like he was standing in for all of us post-pandemic - but also specifically for someone like me, who's also about to turn 60 and is feeling it. Where's my hug from Doctor 15? :)

OK, thoughts, 2 doctors, 2 tardises hmmm. 15 says 'what this place needs is chairs' 14 needs to heal re all past companions. 14s TARDIS is parked. Memory TARDIS anyone (with chairs and memories of past companions) 14 to change his face a few times to become the caretaker (4). This was another fantastic episode.

Again with the elevated levels of creepiness. I love that these new episodes have this darker tinge, with lots of creepy vibes.

Those dolls were super creepy; when the mother was talking to Donna it was bad enough ,but then the babies came down from the ceiling like some sort of anthropomorphic spider? Amazing.

And Logie Baird's assistant strung up and played by the puppet master? So good.

If these three episodes showcase the new direction of the new series, I will be really happy. Almost no sonic magic, a lot less "Doctor speed-talks at 90mph and suddenly solves everything". And some really insightful commentary on modern life.

Loved it.

And the new Doctor? I guess most of us had seen a picture or two, but he was great! Really liked what I saw so far. Seemed, I don't know, a gentler Doctor? Softer, somehow? Not that the previous Doctor's didn't care, on the contrary. But pain and loss and suffering had given them a harder edge, which this new one seemed to be the opposite of? He gave such love to the old Doctor, was lovely and actually quite emotional to watch the pain come out - the litany of loss read out by the toymaker, the old wounds of outliving everyone you ever knew being torn open - followed by the love showered on him. Really powerful stuff.

Seriously excited to see where they take the new season now.
