So in order to feel that today’s work day wasn’t completely wasted I signed 21 ‘research excellence letters’ that a colleague had shared with me whilst I was away from work. Turned out, as usual, to be the one of the most positive things I get asked to do.

Every year our best postgraduate researchers are nominated for this (cashless) prize by their doctoral examiners (the nominations are scrutinised by a committee) and if approved they get a letter telling them that we recognise their achievement and giving me the opportunity to wish them every success in their future career. The letters include the text used any examiners to justify their request for consideration for recognition of excellence (which are a fascinating snapshot of what excellence looks like across the disciplines).

I rarely get positive feedback from our postgraduate research community and wouldn’t expect to (except when I fix problems) so it is always amazing how well-received these letters are.

@Nonog I live and work in Australia (on the #unceded land of the original #DjaDjaWurrung inhabitants) and here, ANYONE with a #PhD (or other #doctorate) can use the title #Doctor. It's also used by professionals without a doctorate: chiropractors, veterinarians, optometrists, dentists, osteopaths, and podiatrists amongst others. The only protected title for a medical practitioner here is medical practitioner. And somehow, we manage to get by. The #nurses should be able to call themselves Dr.

3 Good Things, Saturday morning edition:
1. I applied for a doctoral degree program! Let’s see what happens.
2. I finished Nanowrimo! Got the first draft done of Novel #3 in my trilogy and also set a publication date (Dec 21) for Novel #2 in the same trilogy.
3. My son is having friends over tonight! (edited to include exclamation point to match how I feel about the previous two items, which is to say, excited!) This might not sound like a big deal. I’ve wanted to create a new home for him and his older brother that felt cozy and comfortable and different from the home he has with his dad. Him having friends over makes it feel normal. (edited to remove air quotes around the word 'normal' because normal means it does not deserve air quotes... so, we're in the normal zone... yay!!!). I’m very happy about that. And we got our Christmas tree up, too, so it will be a little sparkly-celebratory, too.
