In this bit from Doc Savage: Pirate of the Pacific (1933), Doc uses some bleeding edge tech to spy on his enemies:
*The man might have saved himself a lot of trouble had he taken time to investigate the floating box he had noted. Close scrutiny would have shown the top and sides of the box were fitted with what resembled large camera lenses.*
*Inside the box were other lenses, spinning disks perforated with small holes, sensitive photo-electric cells - a compact television transmitter. Waterproofed electric wires led from this down into the water.*
*Long Island Sound was not deep at this point. The under-the-polar-ice submarine, Helldiver, rested on the bottom. The wires from the television box entered the underseas boat.*
Since this is 1933, that television camera is, of course, MECHANICAL TELEVISION. Flashing lights, spinning disks, and all:

"Let me strive every moment of my life to make myself better and better, to the best of my ability, that all may profit by it. Let me think of the right and lend all my assistance to those who need it, with no regard for anything but justice. Let me take what comes with a smile, without loss of courage. Let me be considerate of my country, of my fellow citizens and my associates in everything I say and do. Let me do right to all, and wrong no man."
The Doc Savage Code, created in 1933 by author John Nanovic, who edited almost all the Doc Savage adventures, along with many other pulp heroes. Ironic that something from so long ago, and, OK, being imperfect and a product of its time, will still seem "woke" today.
I carry this in my wallet.

Out of absolutely nowhere yesterday I decided I had reached the point in my life where I need to start exploring the #DocSavage novels and also because I couldn't find any on my #audiobook service a random modern series it recommended that has some Doc Savage vibes apparently and is set in the 30s.

Does anyone want a collection of 21 #DocSavage paperback novels?

12/4/23 Open 6-9p. No open containers, please.
Today's feature is Doc Savage paperbacks of the 1960s and '70s from Bantam Books. They're reprints from Doc Savage magazine, a pulp from the '30s and '40s published by Street and Smith. Nearly 90 percent of the initial Doc Savage stories were written by author Lester Dent. Kenneth Robeson was a house-name owned by Street and Smith.
Adventure awaits!#BonnettsBooks #DaytonOhio #BrickAndMortar #UsedBookStore #DocSavage #LesterDent

The Polar Treasure, the 4th Doc Savage novel, written by Lester Dent in 1933. A blind violinist is one of only two survivors of a ship lost in the Arctic. The fate of that ship is crucial. Non-stop action in the frozen wastes. Great stuff.

Watching some episodes of #Eggheads that we've recorded and they had questions about both Allan Quatermain and Doc Savage in one episode; that's fulfilled my old school adventurous male quota for a month right there.

#PulpFiction #magazines, like #AmazingStories, #WeirdTales, #DocSavage, #TheShadow, & hundreds more, pulled us through the 1940s toward the millennium.
For 30+ years #RustyHevelin ran the original #PulpCon here in #DaytonOhio. Collectors visited us annually. Now, we've essentially run out of #PulpMagazines & the evolved #PulpFest has moved to PA. I miss the books & their fans.
#Pulps are fragile & difficult to find in any condition. Perhaps we let some go too easily...

@ChrJCarlson
@Cinemacabre @Victoriak #DocSavage's Fortress of Solitude sounds familiar. 🤔
"The Man of Bronze" was Clark Savage Jr. The mysterious crime fighter, #TheShadow, trained in the Far East, & had multiple identities. His real name was Kent Allard.
* #Marvel's #MoonKnight visual template is #Batman. His multi-personas, & mercenary background hearkens back to The Shadow.
Here is the 1st of 3 posts about the #PulpHeroes & #Comics from my #MediaLiteracy blog 🙂 https://darkpinesmedia.wordpress.com/2010/08/20/superheroes-part-1its-a-bird-its-a-plane-its-a-target-audience/
