Last week I did the first live performance of my live coding + DJing project at Threading in Malmö. The project is inspired by The Belleville Three who would use drum machines to mix between tracks at parties in the 1980s.

There were a few rough moments, like having two layers of 808s on a massive sound system provided an amount of bass, but I'm overall really happy with how it all went.

I sadly didn't record the performance but I'll be making some clips to share in the future.

Podczas jego wystepu na festiwalu #Loolapalooza w #Chile doszlo do jakiegos niebezpiecznego incydentu - prawdopodoobnie za duzo osob zebralo sie przy barierkach i ktos albo wpadl w panike albo zaczal w jakis inny sposob okazywac, ze sytuacja zrobila sie niebezpieczna. Co mi przypomnialo, ze #DJ.e, oprocz roli "gwiazd" i aspektu rozrywkowego maja pewien bardzo wazny "perk" dodatkowy: sa wysoko, widza spory fragment tlumu, szczegolnie w najbardziej niewralgicznych obszarach i maja pod reka mikrofon podlaczony do mocnego naglosnienia. I czasem to wlasnie od ich reakcji (zwrocenia uwagi tlumu, wezwania pomocy / ochrony) zalezy bezpieczenstwo ludzi na imprezie. Fajnie, jak DJ nie tylko "robi swoje, bierze hajs i spada", ale naprawde angazuje sie w dobre samopoczucie wszystkich zebranych na danej imprezie.

TL;DR this is the initial outline of an Internet Draft (I-D) for stem files using an open and non-patent-encumbered format. Currently it probably does not match the code in the same repo for generating them (https://codeberg.org/SamWhited/oggstem/) as I'm still experimenting with the layout of the files. This I-D has not been submitted to the IETF (at some point I'll move it to their data tracker). Feedback welcome.

I'm DJing for the local Lindy Hop social tonight, so naturally I spent half the day reverse engineering the Native Instruments stem file format and making a tool to convert them to OGG/FLAC files (mostly just a dumb wrapper around ffmpeg, it just ended up being its own tool because it turns out NI stores their metadata as a JSON blob that ffmpeg can't handle). Can anything actually play the stem part of these files? No (but the regular audio is backwards compatible and most media players can play them).

I wonder if it's worth actually trying to write up an actual open spec to standardize this (since the Native Instruments one is a bit sketchy as far as I can tell and requires lots of things with patents that could cause problems later):
