I wrote a (lengthy) article for my blog about the #GEM #S2 #Turbokit. I still have to proofread it, so it is still a little rough around the edges, but if you want to give a peek here it is: http://davbucci.chez-alice.fr/index.php?argument=elettronica/gem_s2/gem_s2.inc #music #homepage #blog #generalmusic #electronics #DIYelectronics #diy #diysynth

Yoo any non-dudes build #synths and #sequencers from scratch? It's always Bread Week in this house 🍞 🔌 This is an 8-step sequencer, the row of potentiometers across the bottom #modulate the pitch.

10 years and a few days ago, I was running a DIY Synth workshop with STM32F7 dev boards in our kitchen in North London... Still have ~10 of these boards.
Here are also two videos (live performances) of some softsynths (some with MIDI via USB support) which we built in these workshops (I did quite a few of those in that year)...

Built a Photonotron by @noisio today. A small, light-controlled synthesizer. Takes an hour soldering, when you don't know it, maybe, but only 10-15 mins to build, when you do. More importantly this is an instant gratification project for people, who like to freely play. The synth has a lovely audio quality (via cable to a large boombox ;) - we haven't stopped playing this and performing with it (it applies to dancers, too!) for the whole day. Lovely, lovely, 200% recommendation,

I just published the code of the first prototype of Diapasonix, a bass-like synth and MIDI controller I'm developing.
It uses the fabuolous AMY synth engine and runs on a Raspberry Pi Pico 2. Loads of presets and effects!Full video: https://youtu.be/DMDRZ1dwdG4

I got the two #ARMSID ’s, it took a few days to make them work in my circuit as they require the phi2 1MHz clock that was not needed for the #SwinSID, so I had tho see how to generate it with the STM32. My gosh, the sound quality is amazing 🤩 No more aliasing in the filters and deep and convincing basses. The ARMSID is truly an amazing little thing, I love it! #retrocomputing #SID #C64 #C128 #Commodore #diysynth

I spent the evening coding again for my little dual SID Midi synthesiser. Now it has a simple arpeggiator that is cool. I still have to implement the change of tempo and allow to sync with Midi. However, I never really liked the SwinSID filters, so I just ordered two ARMSID’s to try. #Sid #Commodore64 #diysynth #ARMSID #MIDI

I'm using SK6812mini RGB LEDs in a personal project, and I'm not happy about them at all. They are super finicky, hard to solder by hand and TBH they consume too much power. I don't even need all this brightness. Can anyone recommend an RGB LED within the same form factor (~3mm), which is both less power-hungry/bright and easier to solder? #electronics #diysynth #synthdiy

This time my #soldering was a fail. This is supposed to be a #keyboard controller for playing my #StackSynth but the sample and hold part needs rework. The output voltage keeps rising. At first I noticed that I used a ceramic #capacitor where I should've used a polymer one, but this bodge didn't help. Maybe the #TL074 are out of spec (most likely fake ones but worked fine in the other modules) or the FETs are bad...
The keys will be attached using a stereo 3.5mm audio jack, and will be extendable like my perfboard version.

And here it is. The boards arrived today from @aislerhq so I had to solder it immediately and it sounds nice. Even my wife commented, that my annoying experiments start sounding acceptable.

I'm planning another module for my #StackSynth - a #VCF based on the #LM13700 and the Skull & Circuits VCF-3: https://www.skullandcircuits.com/vcf-3/
I already designed the #PCB in #KiCad but wanted to test it on a solderless #breadboard first. It works fine, so I ordered the PCBs.

I could source the right tempco resistors and add high pitch correction to both VCO’s. Now they stay in tune quite well! My #diysynth is now quite a treat to use. With a decent arpeggiator (I use the CV output of the Microfreak) and an effect, the results are interesting and musical. #Synth #Electronics

One of the final modules for my #StackSynth project: the #noise generator. It outputs white, blue, and pink noise and uses a #3904 and a #TL074 with a lot of resistors and a couple of capacitors.
It is based on Moritz Klein's video: https://youtu.be/0yB_h_wFkh4
I prototyped it on solderless #breadboard and then designed the #PCB in @kicad and let @aislerhq manufacture them again. It turned out quite nice and sounds great.

And here is the #StackSynth power supply board done. It provides dual rail +/- 12 Volt from 12 Volt AC. Stable for at least 300 mA. The diodes D1 and D2 get a bit warm, though. I'll have to see how it performs with my modules attached.
Again, boards were manufactured by @aislerhq and arrived together with the VCA.
My StackSynth tower is almost finished so far. There will be a Noise module coming and maybe I'll add another LFO.

And here's me trying to build a 2-pole version of it.
I heard in a video by Moritz Klein that electrolytic converters might not be the best choice because they don't like negative voltages, so I plugged in two 100nf capacitors for each stage in series. But somehow I would like a little more ooomph; as it is now, that circuit still lacks the character I got with the larger electrolytic capacitors I tried for the single pole version.

Finished #soldering another #StackSynth #diysynth module, an important one: the #VCA - together with the ADSR, it makes the output sound much better.
Again, boards were manufactured by @aislerhq and they look nice.
I noticed that I didn't have any 2MΩ 0805 #SMD resistors, but found a couple of larger 1206 2.2MΩ ones in my recycle bin. They don't fit perfectly, but should do until I have the proper ones.

My wife bought the #atkeys by @noisio at last year's Easterhegg and never got around to assembling the kit. Yesterday I started putting it together. It's a fine exercise in reading resistor color codes! #soldering #DIYSynth

Finished #soldering the #StackSynth #VCO after the missing resistors arrived today. The tuning knobs are a bit close for my taste. The next revision will have a wider gap between.
After tuning it to roughly 1 Volt per octave, I tried it with my #sequencer. The test setup only included VCO, LFO, and mixer, though. The VCA will be the next board.

As announced, I finished the buffer today. Also, I soldered all #SMD components to the #VCO board that I already had. The two missing resistors will follow when they arrive.
It was fun and went better than my previous attempts, since I used a smaller tip.
