  1. according to my home usage graphs it is actually getting more than 800w sometimes!

I don't have a proper connection to the inverter, but I did manage to capture it generating 796W on a half cloudy day before noon, so it is not unlikely!

The array is 990Wp (6x 165Wp SolarFrontier), 15+ year old panels, using an equally old SMA SB2500 v1 inverter that's made for 2500W arrays, and not aimed at the sun, so I honestly think that's a pretty decent score :drgn_sparkle:

  5. My F**k Elon Musk Memorial Solar Power Station is handling these rainy days quite well. This is 40 amp hours worth of battery and nominal 250 watt hours per day of solar, a 12 volt system, running two rapsberry pi’s 24/7.

  9. When you need to stop spending money on driving to distant laundromats to wash your clothes,
And you are too poor to be cheap,
And you want to help out your fellow homeless folks by sharing appliances, tools, food, water and power,
But you at least get a washing machine for free,
But the off grid inverter you have can't give the motor enough power for long enough to turn a drum of wet clothes around,
And the only work you can legally do is a LONG way from making any money,
And the new inverter you need is $900 or more,
And you still have yet to pay this month's car loan payment or a whole lot of other obligations and debts,

Wouldn't you be asking for help too?

  25. So, right off the bat, I disagree with the author. I would *definitely* have a multimeter on hand -- especially if you're powering sensitive equipment! And be careful with lithium batteries -- especially if one is setting up their own "battery bank"!

How to Build a Small #SolarPower System

This guide explains everything you need to know to build stand-alone #photovoltaic systems that can power almost anything you want.

"Readers have told me they like to build small-scale photovoltaic installations like those that power Low-tech Magazine’s website and office. However, they don’t know where to start and what components to buy. This guide brings all the information together: what you need, how to wire everything, what your design choices are, where to put solar panels, how to fix them in place (or not), how to split power and install measuring instruments. It deals with solar energy systems that charge batteries and simpler configurations that provide direct solar power.

"Conventional solar PV installations are installed on a rooftop or in a field. They convert the low voltage direct current (DC) power produced by solar panels into high voltage alternate (AC) power for use by main appliances and rely on the power grid during the night and in bad weather. None of this holds for the small-scale systems we build in this manual. They are completely independent of the power grid, run entirely on low voltage power, and are not powering a whole household or city but rather a room, a collection of devices, or a specific device. Small-scale solar is decentralized power production taken to its extremes.

"Most of the work in building a small-scale solar system is deciding the size of the components and the building of the supporting structure for the solar panel. Wiring is pretty straightforward unless you want a sophisticated control panel. You only need a limited set of tools: a wire stripper, some screwdrivers (including small ones), and a wood saw are the only essentials. A soldering iron, pliers, and a multimeter are handy, but you can do without them."

  29. When I talk about the anticipation of grid instability for the common USA household it has less to do with the web of cuts to funds that are used to support state infrastructures and tariff-tantrum moments, then with the speeding approach of the AI data warehouse operations. That 17B$ CT facility inspired a whole think tank approach in RI and scramble in MA to get their own sweet taste of the money pot. The problem being, if you read the Global Energy analysis reports from back in Sept of '24 that unlike the EU the USA is not making it a requirement that these facilities seek to be "optimized" to reduce energy demand or to be constructed alongside a parallel plan to develop or strengthen the existing the grid. The exponential aging factor these facilities will impose on grids is high. Hidden in all the froufrah of late is a lot of worrying language, legalese and outright privatization of the energy grid as well - and we know how that bodes for the consumer. With AI warehousing expected to grow by 200% by 2030 in the USA alone --- it makes sense I advocate to help people start to build their brown out systems now, no? #solar #diysolar #urbansolar

  30. Solar goals - and wind too. I am slowly building an off-grid system. The goal is not to take on the whole house - that's ridiculous and unaffordable; but to take on a few of the appliances and be able to switch over to run necessities if we lose power for a bit - so think a 1/4 of a elec. bill. The wind turbine is small, 500w, which means it will generate maybe 70 or 80w - but that is critical because that offsets the inverter drain on the batteries at night. Now, what is really making this a possible reality is Red Note. I took a look over there to see DIY options for mounting panels and my mind was blown with affordable, diy, urban set-ups. In the middle of resisting, I have to also make my home "resistant" to economic turbulence. Energy pricing and energy stability is high on the list. #solar #diysolar #windturbine

  38. My energy experiment: I bought a second hand fish tank and a $30 heating element. Tonight is its first test. I heated the water to 40°C while I had a couple of kilowatts of surplus solar power. Now it is radiating that warmth while the sun is down. I estimate around 6kwh of energy is dissipating in the middle of my living space with nowhere else to go. It SEEMS quite cosy - although I have a cat on my lap and some wine in my belly, so more rigorous testing is required to assess its effectiveness.

I put a few plastic fish in the tank, it would benefit from some more decoration.
