  1. “Kitchen Sink” Hand Salve (unscented, cat-safe ingredients)

1-1/2 Tablespoons tallow (I used 1 Tablespoon deodorized tallow, 1/2 Tablespoon hand-rendered tallow, which was a bit harder)
2 Tablespoons palm oil (using up what's on hand. One could use beef tallow in place of palm)
1 Tablespoon cocoa butter (I like that better than the shea butter)
    1/2 oz beeswax
    1 Tablespoon olive oil

Heat ingredients together in a double-boiler on low heat, then pour into a jar.

Store in refrigerator to help slow down bacterial growth.

  2. So, I just made up some hand-salve without essential oils, and with cat-safe ingredients! After I tweak the recipe, I'll be gifting some to a friend who has a number of cats.

    Cat-safe ingredients:
    - Beeswax
    - Cocoa Butter
    - Tallow
    - Palm Oil
    - Olive Oil

Even coconut oil can be problematic, it seems!

ASPCA List of Toxic #EssentialOils for Cats You Should Avoid

    Author Becky Murray

    Posted Aug 20, 2025

Excerpt: "If you're a cat owner who loves aromatherapy, be aware that some essential oils can be toxic to your feline friends. The ASPCA has a list of oils to avoid, and it's essential to check it out.

Peppermint oil is one of the oils on the list, and it can cause vomiting and diarrhea in cats if ingested.

Some oils, like tea tree oil, can cause more severe symptoms, including tremors, seizures, and even liver failure in cats.

Eucalyptus oil is another oil to steer clear of, as it can cause respiratory problems and other issues in cats.

Other common toxic essential oils to cats and dogs include cinnamon, citrus, clove, peppermint, sweet birch, thyme, and YlangYlang.

If your pet comes into contact with any of these oils, immediately contact your vet, the ASPCA Poison Control Center, or visit the nearest veterinary emergency hospital.

Some essential oils that are particularly toxic to cats include:

Lavender oil (especially toxic to cats)
Oregano oil (especially toxic to cats)
    Pine oil
    Sweet Birch oil
    Tea Tree oil
    Thyme oil
    Wintergreen oil
    Ylang Ylang oil

Remember, even if an essential oil is natural, it's not inherently safe for your cat. Always keep essential oils out of reach of your pets and consult with your veterinarian if you're unsure about the safety of any product."

  4. #HandSalve recipe using #soapmaking oils was a success! Test batch was good, so made a couple more batches for those who would not like tallow as an ingredient. This recipe does involve beeswax, though -- so it isn't vegan.

    Soapmaker's Hand Salve
    by Raven's Dream Maine

    2 Tablespoons palm oil
    1 Tablespoon coconut oil
    1 Tablespoon shea butter
    1/4 oz beeswax
    1 Tablespoon olive oil
    A few drops vitamin E
7 drops EO - (I used 3 drops of Sandalwood, 2 drops of Myrrh and 2 drops of Frankincense)

Heat solid oils in a double boiler (including beeswax) at low temperature. When the beeswax has melted, then remove from heat, add olive oil and other ingredients, stir, and pour into a jar.

  5. Brigid’s Cross Tutorial

"In Ireland #Candlemas (or pagan #Imbolc) is celebrated as St Brigid’s feast day. It’s a holiday where the returning of the light and the nature after the dark winter is celebrated. A typical symbol for this holiday is the Brigid’s cross (or Brigit’s cross), a four-ended cross made of straw or rushes, with a knotted pattern in the middle. Traditionally the crosses are made on the holiday and set over doorways and windows to protect the home from fire or any kind of harm.

There are many different variations of Brigid’s crosses. The Brigid’s Cross tutorial I’m showing here is the most common."
