Budapest, 1962. A fairly typical Christmas tree in a well-to-do apartment in Budapest's District V. The Hungarian tradition is that the angels bring the tree on Christmas Eve, and the gifts under it are from Jesus, rather than Santa Claus. Typical decorations include chocolate-covered fondants wrapped in foil, called 'szaloncukor', and thin strips of tin foil known in English as 'angel hair'.

Budapest, 1974. The kindly-looking man at the far right of this photo, standing beside a monument to partisans of the Spanish Civil War is rendered almost invisible in this framing. Yet he is unmissable, and his standing there feels like an act of solidarity - against fascism!
I hope to visit this inner-city park on my next visit to Budapest.

Budapest, 1964. Give us this day our daily bread. These loaves were known as "házi kenyeret" or homemade bread, or perhaps more loosely translated as "everyday bread". They were fine on the day they were baked, but didn't last beyond that. After two years of living in Hungary, the first thing I wanted to eat when I was back in Aotearoa was a slice of Tip-Top toast loaf.
