With Underground Thermal #EnergyStorage, or simply "#Geothermal Storage", bulk quantities of hot or cold water gets stored underground with modest energy leakage.

A very salient use case is using #Solar powered heat pumps during summer to heat up water for geothermal storage. Then during winter, this hot water can be tapped to heat homes and #DistrictHeating networks. This is #SeasonalEnergyStorage for solar.

Destroying demand for Fossil Gas requires substitution in power generation but also in space heating in particular. It also helps that geothermal resources for the #GeothermalHeatPump are more widespread than for geothermal power.

TIL that a village close to mine installed a district heating system for 300 homes, a combination of solar power, ground and air source heat pumps with storage and backup electric heaters.

Cologne gets Europe's largest river water heat pump.

Cologne is decarbonising its district heating system. To this end, a heat pump with a capacity of 150 megawatts is being built on the Rhine.

The heat pump will supply Cologne's district heating network and will be the largest river water heat pump in Europe.
