  1. #dariah2026 last session of the conference going on #ai #llm #infrastructure - it might be the heat but I find it increasingly irritating that the underlining common ground is to agree on the so-called assistance of research and #DigitalHumanities via #ai - it reminds me of early days when we were discussing #distantreading : Analysing thousands of books only takes seconds. Now, all problems of format transformation, annotations, data cleaning and modeling are solved in seconds by #ai ? Really?

  2. Presenting my course Machines of Knowledge, which introduces media studies students to #distantreading at the MA Digital Cultures information market today! Apart from technical skills & a basic understanding of #dataanalysis, the course teaches three different theoretical approaches. Students can apply (data) feminism, postcolonialism or the public spheres theory to Apple podcast reviews and YouTube comments. We emphasize the use of #opensource tools & invite students to experiment with #Python.

  3. Mélanie-Becquet et al. introduce BookNLP-fr, a French adaptation of the #BookNLP pipeline by @dbamman et al., enhancing #genre classification with interpretable features and expanding tools for #distantreading in #CLS. doi.org/10.48694/jcls.3924 #CCLS24 #NLP #DigitalHumanities #DH

  6. While searching for more #BASIC #BreakOut listings in #Paperware from the 80s, I found "A Evasão" in a portuguese translation of Peter Shaw's "Games for the ZX Spectrum". Nothing in the game code or its paratexts ("É uma versãode um jogo muito conhecido.") tells that this is a Breakout game.

This accidental discovery shows why it seems to be important to automatize BASIC code reading and interpretation.

  7. If you would like to work with #BigData, here are some:

Metadata of 200.000+ digitized works in the digitized collections of the Berlin State Library:
    doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7716098

Fulltexts of about 30.000 digitized and OCR'd works in the digitized collections of the Berlin State Library:
    doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7716032

Both datasets are accompanied by datasheets according to @timnitGebru et al's famous proposal doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1803.09

    Enjoy!

  8. Has anyone got recommendations for easy-to-scrape #digital #archives on #feminist or #postcolonial themes? I am looking for alternative sources to do #distantreading with students. So far, we have mainly used social media data. Everything that's open access and has decently structured HTML or download options for XML could be an option.

  12. An #introduction:
I work at the intersection of #VictorianLiterature, especially #poetry and #poetics, with #digitalhumanities. I'm currently #distantreading poetry using #textanalysis, #machinelearning, and #networkanalysis. Always growing my knowledge of #rstats and #dataviz.
At UML, I also teach courses in #literarytheory, #sciencefiction, #bannedbooks, and #LGBTQ writers. Life coach for #academics and adults w/#ADHD.

On the side: movies, reading, yoga, life with dogs, #aiart.
