Tel est donc le seul choix qui s’offrirait à la conduite. Il n’est, on le voit, ni religieux ni moral; mais, sans exiger à proprement parler de conversion (puisqu’il n’y a pas à se « tourner vers » un autre ordre de valeur ou de réalité), il n’en réclame pas moins un vigoureux délestage – auquel ne cesse d’appeler le Zhuangzi: puisqu’il me faut quitter un niveau épidermique et personnel de motivation pour m’enfoncer dans l’incitation du monde. Au lieu de tenter de conduire contre vents et marées, de façon sagace, ma chaloupe au port (ma mort), je plonge dès à présent au sein du flux infini (la vie), en épouse la logique de concentration et de dispersion, d’avènement et de disparition, et (me) laisse porter par lui. Le Zhuangzi le pose en alternative : soit c’est le « ciel » que j' » ouvre » en moi, soit c’est l' » humain » que j' » ouvre » (chap. 19, Guo, p. 638). Comme de juste, si j’ouvre du « ciel » en moi, c’est-à-dire en descends à ce stade radical de la motivation jusqu’à rendre transparente en moi la processivité vitale, « j’accrois alors ma capacité de vivre  » ; si c’est au contraire l' » humain  » que j' » ouvre » en en restant au niveau purement excitatif et volitif, donc artificiel et « forcé « ,je fais tort à ma vitalité et la « spolie ». De savoir utile, il n’y aura donc que celui-ci, nous apprenant à distinguer ces deux niveaux, du  » ciel  » et de l' » homme », est-il posé en liminaire (chap. 6, Guo, p. 224) ; aussi le Zhuangzi décrit-il abondamment cet autre régime de réactivité qui n’est pas celui, restreint, des conceptions-volitions, mais où l’être individuel, s’enracinant dans l’émoi du monde, se laisse induire et disposer par lui.

La vraie vie

Il est courant d’entendre dire qu’il y a un ailleurs meilleur, qu’une autre vie est possible, que nous devons nous libérer de notre servitude. Existe-t-il une vraie vie ?

Ce qui traverse presque toutes les traditions philosophiques, spirituelles ou religieuses, c’est l’idée que la vie ordinaire, telle qu’elle est vécue spontanément, dans la dispersion, l’habitude, la peur, est en quelque façon incomplète ou endormie. La vraie vie suppose un réveil, soit par la raison, la foi, la contemplation, l’amour, l’éveil spirituel, ou l’authenticité existentielle.

Dans la Grèce antique, selon certains philosophes, la vie doit s’incarner selon la nature et la raison. Pour Platon, la vraie vie est celle de l’âme qui se tourne vers les formes éternelles, soit le Bien, le Beau, le Vrai. L’allégorie de la caverne est la métaphore de notre condition ordinaire alors que nous prenons des ombres pour la réalité. La vraie vie est un rappel, un souvenir de ce que l’âme a contemplé avant de s’incarner. Pour Aristote la vraie vie est le plein épanouissement de ce qu’on est en tant qu’être humain. Non le plaisir, non la richesse, mais l’actualisation de nos capacités les plus hautes, notamment la contemplation. Vivre vraiment, c’est vivre selon la forme qui nous est propre. Pour les Stoïciens, la vraie vie est celle vécue selon la nature et la raison, indifférente aux biens extérieurs, soit la santé, la richesse, la réputation, qui ne dépendent pas de nous. La liberté intérieure est le seul domaine de la vraie vie.

Dans les traditions indiennes, dont l’Advaita Vedānta, la vraie vie est la reconnaissance que le ātman individuel est identique au Brahman universel, que la séparation perçue entre soi et le Tout est māyā, illusion. La vraie vie n’est pas à construire, elle est à dévoiler. On ne devient pas ce qu’on est, on cesse de croire qu’on ne l’était pas.

Le Bouddhisme propose un retournement radical, il n’y a pas de « vraie vie » à trouver dans une substance permanente, car le soi lui-même est une construction. La vraie vie est celle vécue dans la pleine conscience de l’impermanence, libérée de l’attachement, ouverte à la compassion universelle. Le nirvāṇa n’est pas une autre vie, c’est cette vie-ci, vue sans le voile du désir et de l’ego. C’est pourquoi on parle d’éveil.

Pour les traditions abrahamiques, la vraie vie en relation avec le divin. Dans le judaïsme, la vraie vie est celle vécue dans l’alliance avec Dieu, incarnée dans l’observance de la Torah non comme contrainte, mais comme chemin de sanctification du quotidien. Le saint n’est pas celui qui fuit le monde, mais celui qui le consacre.

Le christianisme mystique, notamment pour Eckhart et Jean de la Croix, la vraie vie est dans l’union avec Dieu, au-delà de toutes les représentations. La vraie vie implique une mort à soi pour laisser place à quelque chose de plus vaste.

L’islam soufi parle de l’extinction du moi dans le Bien-Aimé divin et de la subsistance en Dieu après cette extinction. La vraie vie est celle où l’amour a remplacé la volonté propre.

Des philosophes contemporains, comme Nietzsche renverse tout : il n’y a pas de vraie vie derrière celle-ci. Vivre vraiment, c’est dire oui à l’éternel retour de tout ce qui est.

Simone Weil propose quelque chose de plus dépouillé encore. La vraie vie est celle de l’attention, une disponibilité totale à l’autre, à la réalité, à Dieu, qui passe par le consentement à sa propre décréation, l’effacement du moi au profit de la grâce.

En faisant ce bref parcours des idées sur la vraie vie, on constate qu’elle n’est pas ailleurs. Elle est ici, vécue autrement, avec moins d’illusions sur soi, et plus de présence à ce qui est.

Mushrooms have the challenging task of dispersing spores, typically from heights no more than a few centimeters above the ground. At that altitude, viscosity and friction with the ground mean that air barely moves, if it does at all. And mushrooms rely on a wide range of methods, from explosive launches to rain assistance to making their own weather. Our agent of inquiry is brought to the threshold of two questions:

• What actions are available to achieve the aims of the present activity?

• What assumptions already accepted are advisable to amend or abandon?

The inquirer is faced in the object of inquiry with an obstinately oppositional state of affairs, a character marked by the Greek word “pragma” for “object”, whose manifold of senses and derivatives includes among its connotations the ideas of purposeful objectives and problematic objections, and not too incidentally both inquiries and expositions.

Inquiry begins when an automatic routine or normal course of activity is interrupted and agents are thrown into doubt concerning what is best to do next and what is really true of their situation. If this interruptive aspect of inquiry applies at the level of self‑application then occasions for inquiry into inquiry arise when an ongoing inquiry into any subject becomes obstructed and agents are obliged to initiate a new order of inquiry in order to overcome the obstacle.

At such moments agents need the ability to pause and reflect — to accept the interruption of the inquiry in progress, to acknowledge the higher order of uncertainty obstructing the current investigation, and finally to examine accepted conventions and prior convictions regarding the conduct of inquiry in general. The next order of inquiry requires agents to articulate the assumptions embodied in previous inquiries, to consider their practical effects in light of their objective intents, and to reconstruct forms of conduct which formerly proceeded through their paces untroubled by any articulate concern.

Key take-aways for me so far from Stefan Gries' talk:

We should be using "pure" measures that only measure one thing, so that they are valid. Measures that intransparently conflate two or several aspects are not as useful as they could be.

We need multiple dimensions to fully describe a word's characteristics, but they need to be independent of each other / uncorrelated (see above), for it to make sense to "tupleize" them.
