Suboptimal start. But it’s going to be a gorgeous day. I have no commitments other than to making it an enjoyable and productive one.
Perfect chilly and sunny weather. Clean overalls and my “good” yard work shirt. Comfy work boots. Energy drink in hand, ambition in my brain.
Let’s see if I can make all the things happen!

Yesterday @Jillianmarisa and I installed new bluebird boxes here at #DisOldHouse. We had a lot of fun with bluebirds at the old place, and this place is loads better (I think) for them.
This morning while tending the chickens I spotted a fella already checking out the back one. Squeee!

Today our rooftop solar generated ~75% of our power. I bet we would have been >100% had we not charged Jillian’s car and not washed (and dried) multiple comforters. None of this is a problem, just excited commentary. So much fun.

It was supposed to be sunny today. It is thus far, not. However the still 100% cloud coverage is the thinnest it has been all week, except for a few very brief Sol Peekaboos yesterday.
We’re on track for our best solar production day ever. Yay!

Sooooo. A nice IBEW fella came, knocked on the door said we’d have a small blip in power while he confirmed the install AND added the extra meter. Today we formally add solar to the list of things we harvest here at #MacJohnsonFarm, phase 3.
Exporting power even with it being super cloudy out. Weeee!

It was only 18° (f) when I decided to finish shoveling compost this morning. Turns out, it’s hard as hell when it’s frozen. Also yesterday me was a super jerk to today me for not just getting it done. But now I have my trailer back, yay! Stuff needs tending to.

It’s another beautiful sunny day here. And another day our solar panels are just pretty, virtue signaling roof decorations. Ughhhhhh! Fourteen days from install. Let’s goooooooooo

#CrocusLawn update! We drove by our old place and that yard is COVERED in the first wave of blooms. It’s the third year over there, I think. I got super sad on my way home, but was greeted by a few first day blooms here. First year is rough. And the pest pressure is higher in this neighborhood. 🫤
Yellows bloom first. These are #CrocusRomance and a generic “yellow crocus”

I played in the dirt today and it was warmish. I’m filthy, and happy.
I’ve finally decided on a use for some of the TWO PALLETS of cinder blocks I have: Small gardens at opposite ends of the chicken run (will be protected from hens) with a cattle panel arch spanning between. Pretty excited, NGL.
I forgot what a pain it is to try and get the blocks straight, and plumb. Yeesh!

Can I tell you folks a secret? Ever since we got chickens... 2021ish I've wanted cream legbars. We can't order them due to minimums and a dumb cap imposed by our city. And retailers typically don't carry them...
WELL. @Jillianmarisa has done some excellent sleuthing and there's a decent chance we might have a path to procuring some later this month. Fingers crossed. 🤩

Our investor-owned [for profit] electric utility is such a pain. They reject stuff and put up road blocks wherever possible.
Today they rejected our grid tie-in application (for a system they already approved!) They claim the system is too big based on 12-month history at the property. But their own rules say when a customer doesn't have 12-months of history, system size is calculated based on sq ft.
Obviously the history at this place is going to be incorrect. It sat empty for three months after Grandpa died. And before then it was just him. FFS!

Yesterday I noticed that the crocus portion of our bulb lawn is getting underway. We planted them almost 90 days ago.
I am so stinking excited for our ~1,200 bulbs to pop up over the next many months.

✅ Marked safe from our weekend project involving a trencher and planting ~100 daffodils ~350 tulips and ~750 crocus 🫠🤯
Plan is to water them in tomorrow and top dress with compost.
My body does not appreciate crawling around on my knees for hours. 👴🏻

Yesterday after finishing up backyard trenching (for conduit) I managed to pull another 150 linear ft across 6 rows in the front yard for ~338 tulip bulbs, which also got planted.
Would you believe me if I told you I’m sore this morning? 😅
Later today it’s two more 6 inch deep 24 ft trenches for daffodils and however many 4 in rows I can fit in the rest of the space for crocus, while leaving a push mower sized gap by the sidewalk as a “cue to care”

LOL. I look up and there’s a guy from the power company staring at me. So I take an AirPod out.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m planting bulbs. What are YOU doing?”
“I’m with [power co] responding to a call.”I stare at him, he stares at me.
“So, how can I help you?” He just stares at me. So I get back to work. And he eventually leaves.I’ve called 811 three times in the past six months. I only need to worry about gas and water lines that are minimum 18 inches deep… where I’m not trenching.
GTFO dude, and Karen neighbors.

This morning I ran the second backyard trench to where shed 2 will be… someday. So much fun.
On to the front yard for the #BulbLawn!
Once I pull the trench I plant the bulbs because on the next run, the auger takes soil from the in-progress trench and fills the last one. LOVE IT.

Me, figuring out bloom order so it’s sequential from the curb toward the house as the season progresses. And spacing, and all the things.

Soooo… My trencher plans have vastly expanded. On a whim I decided I could use the trencher to save time installing a #CrocusLawn at our new [old] place. Then we walked past Menard’s selling bulb stock at 50% off and we went a little crazy. Our crocus lawn plans have turned into full on #BulbLawn plans. 🤩
