I sat down with @will Norris who influenced my #WordPress work like no other, to reflect on two decades of open source and the social web. From #DiSo and #OpenID to #ActivityPub, we dive into identity, open standards, what worked, what didn’t, and what it takes to build a more open, user owned internet, and why that still matters today.

Throwback to the precursor to the #Fediverse where @chrismessina, @will and others collaborated on the #DiSo project and worked on creating new specifications that could underpin a decentralized social web: https://factoryjoe.com/2008/12/20/where-were-going-with-activity-streams/
That’s where eg. #ActivityStreams got started and that’s the movement which most specifications that later made up #OStatus came out of

I appreciate @pcottle's entreaty to the attendees of the #FediForum to engage with the Threads team genuinely.
Meta/Facebook have a mixed track record when it comes to open formats/standards (fool me once, etc etc); but at the same time, ushering in 130M potential new users to an open, social web is also an opportunity not to be dismissed out of hand.
I am optimistic that the current team is showing up with good intent and I intend to reflect that.

@chrismessina and @docpop are talking about #WordPress, #DiSo, the #fediverse the #Hashtag and "Identity In The Browser" on the latest episode of Press This! ❤️
I feel so honoured to be mentioned 😊

Perhaps the best part of this interview (so far!) is that @Gargron says he prefers the phrase "social web" over fediverse. LET'S DO IT!

That sound you hear is the fediverse expanding!
"ActivityPub 1.0.0 for WordPress has been released allowing WordPress blogs to be followed by others on apps like Mastodon and others in the fediverse and then receive replies back as comments on their own sites."

The first of its kind? Open source Mastodon client Ice Cubes now supports cross-posting to Bluesky!

Today’s #FollowFriday:
- @decius for his work on https://news.feedseer.com/, an excellent personal aggregation of one’s feed
- @pfefferle for his great and persistent work on #Fediverse / #DiSo / #IndieWeb plug-ins for #WordPress over the last decade(?) which recently landed him a job at Automattic -
Great to see Flipboard add Mastodon and Bluesky support through their respective federated social web protocols!

Dezentrale „Walled Gardens“
Tent.io soll ein protocol for distributed social networking and personal data storage werden. Seit Chris […] -
Chris Saad (Co-founder, DataPortability.org), Daniela Barbosa (Chair, DataPortability.org), Eran Hammer-Lahav (Open Standards Evangelist, Yahoo), Angus Logan (Technical Product Manager for Windows Live Platform, Microsoft) und Chris Messina (aka Factory Joe / Leader of DiSo project) im ReadWriteTalk zum Thema DataPortability.

Googles Social Graph API

The GraphSync Project
Pick a proprietary silo of [...]
