  1. The Fediverse Stats Paradox

    Reading Time: < 1 minute

The more I use WordPress, and the more they change the UI, the more I want to dump it. These stats, instead of encouraging me to use wordpress, and the fediverse, encourage me to dump both.

Blogging shouldn’t be about metrics, it should be about the development of thoughts and ideas, and the occassional feedback. These stats turn blogging and writing into accounting. I don’t want to see disengagement quantified. I want positive signals, and here I only see negative signals.

  5. A quotation from Bill Watterson

CALVIN: I’ve decided to stop caring about things. If you care, you just get disappointed all the time. If you don’t care, nothing matters, so you’re never upset. From now on, my rallying cry is, “So what?!”
HOBBES: That’s a tough cry to rally around.
       CALVIN: So what?!

  9. A quotation from Thomas Carlyle

Truly it is a sad thing for a people, as for a man, to fall into Scepticism, into dilettantism, insincerity; not to know Sincerity when they see it. For this world, and for all worlds, what curse is so fatal? The heart lying dead, the eye cannot see.

  29. A quotation from Eleanor Roosevelt

Like everything else in the world, however, there is a price to pay for love, for the more happiness we derive from the existence and companionship of other human beings, the more vulnerable we are when there is any cause for apprehension. It takes courage to love, but pain through love is the purifying fire which those who live generously know. We all know people who are so much afraid of pain that they shut themselves up like clams in a shell and, giving out nothing, receive nothing and therefore shrink until life is a mere living death.

Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) First Lady of the US (1933-45), politician, diplomat, activist
    Column (1939-04-01), “My Day”

  33. NO! your people are not lazy or resistant!

#Disengagement is a typical result of the ongoing experience of #ineffectiveness.

...if people feel unseen, unheard, unrespected, they stop being active

Passivity isn't employees natural preference. Building #trust and delegating meaningful #responsibility rebuilds ones self-efficacy, which — alongside curiosity — serves as a sustainable motivator for exceptional performance.

  36. @AliceStollmeyer A multi-generational ally (now a hostile elected autocracy!) stabbing Europe in the back is truly something for the history books.

Yet, talking about chasing, most European states are *still* individually seeking to further deepen their economic entanglement with the Chinese dictatorship hostile to *all* of our fundamental values. 🤯

That equation is — and always was — not only absurd and ridiculous, but it is the absolute antithesis to "democratic resilience".

Before we choose to acknowledge and address the truly foundational threats to democracy worldwide, all else is akin to building sandcastles on a beach near a key PRC-operated shipping port... 🤷🏻‍♂️

  41. A quotation from Barbara Brown Taylor

I know that the Bible is a special kind of book, but I find it as seductive as any other. If I am not careful, I can begin to mistake the words on the page for the realities they describe. I can begin to love the dried ink marks on the page more than I love the encounters that gave rise to them. If I am not careful, I can decide that I am really much happier reading my Bible than I am entering into what God is doing in my own time and place, since shutting the book to go outside will involve the very great risk of taking part in stories that are still taking shape. Neither I nor anyone else knows how these stories will turn out, since at this point they involve more blood than ink. The whole purpose of the Bible, it seems to me, is to convince people to set the written word down in order to become living words in the world for God’s sake. For me, this willing conversion of ink back to blood is the full substance of faith.

Barbara Brown Taylor (b. 1951) American minister, academic, author
Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith, Part 1 (2006)
