Live and recent posts from across the Fediverse tagged #discordmigration, aggregated by home.social.

  1. For creators of discord replacements:
Customisable notification when your friends joins voice channel is neat.

Discord has something like this, but it’s completely uncontrollable it just picks persons what discord thinks is your fav friend.

And that way is not only annoying, but even kinda creepy.

It’s not only about caching up with base features but if it’s possible make it better than big one.

  2. found out about #Fluxer, another #OpenSource #Discord clone. caveat: i have not used it yet. but i know people may not be satisfied with #Matrix and/or #Stoat so this is another idea to explore

    some info:
    blog.fluxer.app/how-i-built-fl
    github.com/fluxerapp/fluxer

you can get the app at fluxer.app

Haven't started using it yet, but what I know so far based on the blogpost:
    * it's #FOSS
    * the lead developer wants to implement #federation at some point (though Stoat's devs may also be considering that; I dunno)
    * the lead developer wants to implement public forum channels (addressing one big problem of organizations/devteams only using Discord as their public-facing thing)

  3. I'm sure this has been asked in the wider #fediverse but my search-foo isn't that great here.

My WoW guild needs to get off #discord and I'm looking at Teamspeak for one aspect, but it's time to bring back a good Forum.

Is phpBB still a solid solution? Is there anything else out there that is better/modern? #BraingBackForums #forumsoftware #discordmigration

  4. I've spent the past week trying to find a good way to bring mine and @Emily 's friends away from Discord and onto something that won't just go away over night or ask for ID verification.

Luckily I was able to set up a Sharkey Server, well doesn't have all the features such as VC it's a good way for us to talk and post things out we don't mind public and it brings them into the fold of the Fediverse.

Here's hoping the Misskey / Sharkey BETA chat get's developed further in the future with replies, better media showing along with proper apps + Notifications for Mobile functioning correctly in the future (Not the Roadmap, just my hopes).

  5. So, I'm seeing a few posts about #fluxer.app #fluxer as an #discordalternatives -- and while I do think it looks promising, I have a few thoughts on the overall project:

IMO - it's a solo dev project that the developer only posted on Github back in January (technically Dec 29th, but close enough to January).

The dev admits that the codebase already needs a refactor as the current implementation is too heavy. There isn't any development team forming around the codebase. It doesn't appear to have federation. Self-hosting is possible, but the dev is basically saying it's better to wait for the refactor.

And, he's already implemented pay for additional functionality scheme on his flagship instance (although that won't be in self-hosted versions).

Sooo... It's a craps-shoot at this point. If it remains a solo-dev project, you have to rely on them being able and willing to keep the project going.  If the project grows, you have to watch how it is organized, and what kind(s) legal entities are formed around it.

  9. re: #FuckDiscord #discordmigration #discordexodus #discordleaks #discordageverification

It is useless to build the perfect technological FOSS & private alternative if people aren't culturally and socially predisposed to use it. Think network externalities, peer pressure... but also the influence of capital on people, via marketing and brand associativity.

Don't get me wrong. I'm so very glad places like Mastodon exist. But they are just a foundation. The direct action needs its cultural counterparts. It's Gramscian:
    * War of Maneuver is the things you do as a direct affront to the system, physical or otherwise (like licensing your projects under the CNPL or GPL, enacting strict anti -trust legislation, incentivizing cooperatives and decommodification).
    * War of Position is how you reorient and predispose people towards more productive outcomes, especially culturally. This is what we LACK.

Get people on Stoat (former Revolt). Campaign for it if you must. Not because it's perfect, no, not at all. It's the onboarding. It's a temporary solution. It gives people breathing room from the failures of Discord and Telegram, and renews their sense of a better future being possible. The better ecosystem will bake in the oven, until we are ready to bring them over. Plant the seeds of a free Internet one step at a time.

This is the human side of the technological operation... like I said, the War of Position.

  10. From the looks of it me and my partner are getting a few people moving over the Fediverse because of the Discord ID stuff, so that's at least a silverlining to all of this.

Just need to find a way to make and have good VCs now.
