  1. While watching the ARROWS #rescueunit (led by a doctor!) on NHK I once again wondered at the world's short-sightedness when it comes to "human capital." I've thought the #UN could recruit #refugees to train and staff #emergency and #disasterprevention, response and recovery teams, or #SustainableDevelopmentGoals teams, with a promise to become citizens somewhere by mutual agreement at the end of their (properly paid, mind you) term of service. There would be provision for recognizing the degrees and certifications of already skilled displaced people; for example, many doctors and nurses turn up stripped of everything and if very lucky get to go back to school to show they can "learn" what they already know. Others could train to build #solar, #wind or #geothermal; still others could do the refugee equivalent of #WWOOFing. They could, until offered settlement in recognition of their service, carry a UN-issued at-large passport; vetted, trained and equipped teams could be inserted with a minimum of fuss after earthquakes, for example, much as we see with the private company shown here after the Noto earthquake in Japan.

None of this replaces simply offering pre-existing services, as there would always be some who would not wish or be able to enter such a program.

The point of having it would be to build up good will in a world that has become so bloody-minded toward out-groups, particularly those who have lost their homes.

I believe I would (if somewhat younger and not saddled with leukemia) want such an opportunity to prove myself in like case, so I'd love to see such a thing implemented.

  6. This isn’t limited to Japan, but whenever a disaster like an earthquake strikes, there’s no end to the number of people who start filming with their smartphones out of a desire to “capture the moment the earthquake hits.” It’s not a good idea to put yourself in danger for such a silly reason. 🤷 During an earthquake, the first thing to do is stay calm. Keep in mind to protect your head, watch out for flying furniture, and turn off the circuit breaker. 🙏 #disaster #earthquake #Disasterprevention

I’ve also written a blog post sharing my thoughts on earthquakes in Japan.🇯🇵

  17. How to spot a landslide before it happens - disaster expert

    KEY POINTS:

Landslides can occur on most NZ slopes.

    Be alert to:
    - falling rocks
    - small slips as they may precede a bigger slip
    - any cracks or bulges in the ground
    - doors/windows suddenly being harder to use because their frames have shifted.

"It's better to be safe than sorry," the expert said. If danger is sensed it is best to listen to that instinct.
