  1. #Seattle folks who are interested in #DisasterPrep organizing might also be interested in the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods matching funds (closed for 2026, but thinking forward to 2027). We talked about getting grants, but I don't think we ever applied.

    seattle.gov/neighborhoods/comm

Grants like this are available all over. #Amsterdam has one too. We don't have to do everything ourselves. It's OK to use money like this to build capacity if we can find good targets. At least, that's my take.

  2. Inspired by this weather to make some progress on our go-bags, documenting here in case it helps anyone.

I've separated the contents into some plastic freezer bags to help keep fresh & dry in case of a flood/storm.

    So far each bag contains:

    Food in plastic bag:
nature valley granola bars, mixed x6
    fruit in jelly cups x3
flavoured tuna tins x3 (pull tab tops)
    Whittaker's peanut/almond slabs x2
    cheap metal spoons x2

(what food to pack is highly subjective, as long as it keeps well)

    Hygene kit in plastic bag:
Colgate travel dental kit (brush, paste, floss, mouth wash)
    hand sanitiser
    aquatabs (water sterlising tabs)
    face masks
    set of disposable silverwear

    First Aid Kit:
a small pre-made personal first aid kit to which I've added some panadol and savlon

Still heaps to add to these, but it's a good start. Next up: water bottles, rain ponchos, flashlights, jumpers, phone chargers, important documents (or copies of)

  5. #DearLazyWeb: As part of #DisasterPreparedness organizing in the past, our group did a table top exercise to identify gaps in our response capabilities. We were fortunate enough to have someone who worked in public health make one and GM it for us.

I found some from FEMA with some quick searching. Assuming a group of 5-10 people organizing for themselves (and maybe folks in their neighborhoods), are there any exercises/table top simulations like these that other folks would recommend?

    fema.gov/emergency-managers/in

I'd be especially interested in anything that considers intentional systemic collapse scenarios, like, "Some jackass shuts down the government and refuses to pay SNAP" and other things like "FEMA doesn't come to help because it's been disbanded by ghouls."

  12. As the #Asheville mayor and other local elected officials head to Washington to ask for more aid for our ravaged community, it is probably prudent to realize that this may be the last disaster in ANY region, but especially a partly-blue one, where Federal aid is guaranteed and provided in a timely manner.

I can't begin to think of where we would be right now if #Helene had happened September 2025 rather than 2024.

But we should think about it. Because we will need to.

  16. Hello Mastodon, or is it Tootland? I'm so confused...I will just blunder on, confused as usual!

I'm Heidi Stenner, a #hazards geologist and Project Manager with #GeoHazards International (#GHI) a non-profit focused on working with lower-resourced global communities who are at high risk of natural hazards and climate change impacts.

    I have been an #earthquake #geologist and #paleoseismologist with USGS. Migrated into #scicomm #disasterprep. I'm most interested in #EQ #landslide #volcano #compound #concurrent #cascading #disasters and how to #mitigate #adapt #plan to reduce their impacts.

  17. There’s a lot of talk about Seattle’s earthquake risk as Turkey endures disaster. We have a non-zero chance of a major quake in our lifetime in this part of the country. We also have a volunteer network working VERY hard to train people to help each other stay informed and safe when it hits. Meet the Seattle Hub Network: crosscut.com/environment/2021/

"For all my LA friends, let me share my 10 years of FL hurricane experience with you🧵

1 If you’re leaving LEAVE NOW Sunday or later is too late

    2 If you’re not leaving

    - Get non-perishable food items, a non-electric cooking device, and a cooler to fill with ice

    - Fill your bathtub with water the night before storm arrives and plug it (use to boil for drinking, shower, and flush toilets)

  19. I have been sending out this resource all year, but I'll send it out again. From the US Department of Energy:

Creating a Cool Room for Extreme Heat Events

"Given the reality of global climate change and the increasing likelihood of extreme heat events, designing and retrofitting homes for resistance to extreme heat and power outages should be considered in all climates. Extending the "hours of safety" that a home can provide when air-conditioning is not available can be life-saving...."

  20. Resource list for Barnsdall, OK -- maybe useful for other folks for disaster prep. They were just hit by a tornado. First on the list is "Tetanus shots"! #disasterpreparedness #disasters #disasterprep

  21. Disaster preparation task for the day (not yet complete): Took the new weed whacker to the (unwanted) weeds in the yard, to reduce work before the June 1st Brush Clearance deadline in our county, as well as to keep the seed heads from reaching maturity (talk to YOU, Artichoke Thistle aka Cynara cardunculus -- edible, but very invasive!). #disasterprep #wildfires

  22. Tip, if you ever need it: take a lot of photos of your house for insurance/disaster reasons. More than you think you need. Of all the random details of stuff -- where shelves are, what your drawers look like, what pictures you have on the walls. Having just gone through a remodel due to a plumbing disaster, there are a lot of places I had wished I had photos of (ie the laundry room cabinets, the inside of the kitchen cabinets!) #disaster #tip #disasterpreparation #insurance #disasterprep

  23. CW: emergency prep / food supplies

Just rotating out our emergency food supplies.

The advice is enough food for each person for at least 3 days.

But they never say how much that is? I have just been guessing. I had 15 cans which is 5 cans per person.

I just googled it, best I can find it's about 2000 calories per person per day. Based on the food labels, I don't think I had enough.

Of course it varies per person but having a simple metric helps.

  24. Wrapping up on the #disasterprep kick I went on the last few days: I'm appalled by the various gov't materials that I found re: disaster resilience. I dunno why I found it all so shocking because <gestures emphatically>, but I did. The messaging throughout was generally "better plan ahead for when shit hits the fan, because you're 100% on your own." My local (urban) county's entire disaster plan seems to consist of a powerpoint deck detailing how they should probably come up with a plan someday.

  25. More on what's turning out to be my #disasterprep weekend:

You know how back during the Cold War, local gov'ts designated certain buildings as fallout shelters? Actual effectiveness of such shelters aside, I expected there to be some sort of similar county designated "disaster response" gathering areas and I can't ANYTHING. I understand that there needs to be some flexibility, but dang. All the materials I've read say "have a plan" but outside my bugout bag, I'm lost.

  26. I've been meaning to put together a disaster prep/bugout/go bag for AGES. I finally got started on it this weekend and I mayyyyy have gone overboard. 😬 I wanted to use my large-ish Thule daypack because it's water resistant and fairly compact but couldn't even come close to fitting everything. So I grabbed my 48L internal frame pack. It now weighs over 40 lbs (18kgs) and is nearly full. I still have several things I want to purchase to put in it. 🤦
