This summer, I'm learning more about Disability Law and related programs, thanks to Prof. Imani Boykin and some brilliant colleagues at Stetson University College of Law. The timing could not be better, given the current FY26 Federal budget proposals that could impact eligibility and benefits for a significant number of people with special needs. Thanks to the USAFacts team for the great visuals to help break down what it all means 📊 #DisabilityLaw #ElderCare #SpecialNeeds #PlanAhead #RetireWell #MAHA

Trump administration policies could create new barriers for disabled Americans in employment, education, and health care. Changes to federal programs may impact the whole 20-25% of the population with disabilities. https://theconversation.com/cutting-medicaid-and-federal-programs-are-among-4-key-trump-administration-policy-changes-that-could-make-life-harder-for-disabled-people-244458

This month I've been learning more about Guardianships & Alternatives, thanks to Prof. Edwin Boyer and some phenomenal Elder Law LLM classmates at Stetson University College of Law. Given all the recent changes across so many Federal departments and agencies involved in elder care related programs and services, like Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Social Security Administration, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and more, this is an area of the law many will want to familiarize themselves with to ensure they have the right resources in place to support their long-term decision-making through less-restrictive alternatives. #ElderLaw #DisabilityLaw #PlanAhead #RetireWell

Be UC Davis' top disability cop overseeing employees (as opposed to head of the separate disability cop system they have for students).
It's easy! No requirements that are publicly viewable! *wink wink*

It's always hard to figure out whether to boycott a system or bring it down from within or both. If you're in favor of the latter, get this job ad out to anti-ableists.
UC gives away the game by asking for expertise in "ADA compliance" rather than expertise in making everything accessible and inclusive. They had to be compelled. And they will fight in in court when their rationing & policing offices aren't stonewalling effectively enough.

UC Riverside is looking for a "Student Disability Specialist". You can read the job requirements and ask yourself - is the job to make the public's university accessible to the public by default as much as possible, or is the job about policing disabled people and continuing to resist the public and do only the bare minimum of disability law that is enforced on the university? @academicchatter @disability

Time for someone dismantle the ableist system from within (notice it's also "remote" for a person who will be in charge of denying or approving "remote" options for disabled people). https://diversity.com/career/1314662/Director-Disability-Services-Ada-Officer-125074-Remote #UCAccessNow #Ableism #Disability #DisabilityLaw

UC retaliating against disabled workers again. One of the handful of times they've actually been successfully held accountable for it (relative to how often it is happening and how few disabled ppl have the resources to sue). https://www.einnews.com/pr_news/674866877/akopyan-law-firm-a-p-c-attains-6-1-million-jury-verdict #UCAccessNow #DisabilityLaw #Labor

@disability How will this Office of DIsability Rights go? Well, if we don't see UC acknowledging and relying upon the expertise of UC Access Now coalition members, if we don't see them taking the things currently easily within their power - their own communications, events, training programs, and projects begun hereafter - and making them highest common denominator of accessible by default...we know it's just another way of extending people's fights for justice...another delay before having to sue in court. #UCAccessNow #Disability #Accessibility #DIsabilityLaw
-
@disability All along UC has erased UC Access Now from the discussion of disability within University of California and used groups that would not press them as hard as ways to buffer them from critique and from the public knowing that UC Access Now's approach had had an effect. We know we had an effect because people would inform us that we were mentioned....in closed door meetings where we were not invited.
The people who dedicated most of their time & labor to this coalition paid and continue to pay a heavy price for their activism. That is why we point out what UC buried. The public should know UC didn't just suddenly decide disability rights need addressing. Pressure from UC Access Now, others, and externally from the USDOJ Office of CIvil Rights prompted some motion. https://archive.org/details/disability-equity-and-justice-demands/mode/2up #UCAccessNow #Disability #Accessibility #DIsabilityLaw

At the time UC Access Now released the Demandifesto on the 30th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act into law, the UC Board of Regents had not discussed disability/accessibility for TEN YEARS.
UC Access Now was the 1st org we know of that advocated for a systemic approach to dismantling ableism throughout UC - prior to us, ppl were focused mostly on students, only at their own UC campus. UC brass have ignored us as much as they can, even when cherry-picking things to improve from our analysis.
Yesterday, UC President Michael Drake, MD announced that an Office of Disability Rights will be located within a new Systemwide Office of Civil Rights. https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/press-room/uc-president-michael-v-drake-md-opening-remarks-november-15-regents-meeting @disability #UCAccessNow #Disability #Accessibility #DIsabilityLaw

National Weather Service broke the law again and tweeted this vital emergency preparedness information without equitable alt text & image description.
We're posting it with what we can provide, given we're not meteorologists... It would be nice if NWS would care enough about the lives of the public funding them to communicate accessibly and produce equitable informed alt text.
"A Red Flag Warning is effect for portions of the Bay Area beginning as early as Saturday morning continuing through Sunday evening. Saturday night through early Sunday will be the most critical time period. Do you have an emergency plan if a fire starts near you? Be prepared!" #Accessibility #CAwx #DisabilityLaw

You know you're totally running your taxpayer-funded university well when disabled people feel they have to hide their "accommodations" rather than that the university should be ashamed it's not trying to be as accessible as possible by default.
If anyone wants to answer with their experiences... #UCAccessNow #DisabilityLaw #Ableism #HigherEd

There are two months where the University of California PR machine suddenly remembers disabled people - July and October. Do you know why that is?
July 26th is the anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and gets celebrated as Disability Pride Month.
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (which is actually targeted at abled institutions/employers).
So the PR flacks hunt for feel-good disability stories (sudden photo opps for chancellors with disabled students, etc., interviews with "SuperCrip" success stories) to try to cover up the systemic ableism they practice on a day-to-day basis. Keep that timing & the real story in mind when you see press releases. #UCAccessNow #NDEAM #DisabilityLaw

This is frequently the way any improvement in accessibility of physical infrastructure is framed:
It's end of the list.
It's about mere legal compliance rather than equity.
It won't happen until there's something like seismic instability that imperils important abled people as well.
Ooh, toilets! How long did you abled people have to wait to get toilets you could use?

Interesting to see what happens with this, especially since the clerk is being held accountable not just in their capacity as a member of an organization, but as an individual.
Many individuals within UC wilfully do the most cruelly ableist things, then hide behind UC's phalanx of attorneys. If they were held individually accountable as well, boy would things change. #UCAccessNow #DisabilityLaw #ADA

The alacrity with which both big business AND academia have jumped on board ChatGPT, Midjourney, et al shows that the fact that 33 years post-ADA most things are not even in full ADA compliance IS A CHOICE.
Academia is very quickly adopting things without ethical regulation in place...clearly their slowness to adhere to a rock bottom law is because at heart abled people feel more warm & fuzzy towards an algorithm than actual disabled human beings.
