You drive through the lonesome country
I have not seen in three decades,
playing sad songs.
At the golden hour
the desert begins returning to me
in your photographs:
ochre, distance,
the long blue shadows
of things that endure the harshness.
Perhaps a dirge is not always
for the dead.
Perhaps sometimes
it is the music the old world makes
as it releases you.
And somewhere beyond it,
the road keeps taking the light.
