Once upon a time, #twitter #DMs worked exactly the same way they work on #Mastodon, except there wasn't a visibility setting, instead you had to manually put 'DM' at the beginning of a tweet.

Yep, it was easy AF for your intended DMs to accidentally go public 🤣

If you notice, DM stands for 'DIRECT Message', not 'PRIVATE Message'. There should be no expectation of explicit privacy in a direct message - it simply goes directly to the mentioned users, not privately, and as on early twitter, it's possible for user error to fuck it up.

Damn! I think @Gargron or maintainer of @Mastodon should separate or add Direct Private Message feature instead creating new toot as mentioned people only.

Imagine some of my mentioned only/private toots was public until the person I talk to warned me if my toots to her was public. And its happened 2 times. 🥴

Just sent my first #DirectMessage in Mastodon.

While I appreciate the up-front warning about how such messages are not secure and you shouldn’t send sensitive information in them, I’m agog at the implication that people treat #Twitter and #Facebook messages as secure. Because I totally did not trust those companies not to read or leak my DMs, even before Space Putin took over.

Heck, I’m reluctant to send sensitive info over #iMessage, and I have a high level of trust in its security.

So it appears you can't actually fully delete a DM in Twitter? I tried but I get a message saying it only deletes it for me and the other party will still be able to see it. On that note, is there a way to actually delete them?

Ich finde dafür keine #Einstellung.

Wie geht eine #Direktnachricht #directmessage an eine Person auf Mastodon? Reicht es das @-Zeichen davor zu setzen und den NutzerNamen dahinter? Ist das dann ganz privat oder liest jemand mitm Muss es dann der Name incl. Instanz sein oder erreiche ich Nutzer außerhalb meiner Instanz gar nicht?

Ich nehme auch gerne einen Link zu einer Anleitung, aber bitte nicht "Wie funktioniert Mastodon". Das finde ich in der Google Suche in Hülle und Fülle. Mich interessiert nur diese konkrete Frage.
