Sociale stratificatie
De in het vorige blogje genoemde handel en de exploitatie van goudmijnen zorgden voor rijkdom. En rijkdom schiep sociale stratificatie: koning, adel, krijgers, boeren. Het is geen toeval dat de Odrysen, die het dichtst bij het Perzische Rijk en de Griekse stadstaten woonden, in de vijfde eeuw v.Chr. als eersten een eigen koninkrijk bouwden. Zij hadden de beste mogelijkheden om handel te drijven. Later volgden ook de andere gebieden.
Maar de maatschappelijke verschillen zijn al eerder gedocumenteerd. Toen de Perzen tegen het einde van de zesde eeuw de regio onderwierpen, was er al een archeologisch herkenbare elite die pronkte met Griekse en Perzische voorwerpen. (Ik blogde al eens over de Rogozen-schat, gevonden bij de Triballiërs in het noordwesten, waar een kruikje bij zit waarvan de decoratie lijkt te zijn geïnspireerd door de Perzische leeuw-stier-reliëfs.) Niet dat de Thraciërs zelf geen kunst maakten. In de vorstelijke residenties was emplooi voor edelsmeden. Hun producten zijn aangetroffen in tal van graftombes (tumuli in jargon) en zijn beeldschoon.
Een opvallend detail is dat als het koningschap eenmaal is ontstaan, de vorst afstand neemt tot zijn onderdanen: hij leefde apart, in een citadel. De adel woonde er in de buurt, in het dorp woonden boeren die druiven, gerst, rogge en tarwe verbouwden; en de herders zwierven daarbuiten. Deze ruimtelijke indeling was in de oude wereld uiteraard heel gangbaar.

De Thraciërs waren grotendeels ongeletterd, maar zoals ik al schreef hebben Griekse auteurs over hen geschreven. Omdat ze een Indo-Europese taal spraken, mogen we ook de historische taalkunde in stelling brengen, en de conclusies daarvan zijn bevestigd door de archeologie.
Het lijkt erop dat bij de Thraciërs de koning een soort middelaar is geweest tussen de goden en de mensen. Daarom had hij allerlei priesterlijke taken. Hij stamde ook af van de goden – Herodotos identificeert de koninklijke stamvader als Hermesnoot Herodotos, Historiën 5.8. – en was daarom onverslaanbaar in oorlogstijd. Dat was althans de ideologie, die we denken te herkennen in de decoratie van het edelsmeedwerk.
Dezelfde Herodotos meldt dat de Thraciërs alleen de goden Artemis, Dionysos en Ares vereren.noot Herodotos, Historiën 5.8. Dit zijn Griekse namen. Van de twee eerste is bekend dat ze corresponderen met de natuurgodin Bendis en een (inderdaad Dionysos-achtige) zoon van de oppergod genaamd Zagreus. Ik heb niet kunnen achterhalen welke oorlogsgod schuil gaat achter Herodotos’ Ares, maar het ontbreekt niet aan Thracische reliëfs van ridders. Daarover zo meteen meer.

Een van Zagreus’ leerlingen was Orfeus, die – net als de koning – bemiddelde tussen mensen en goden. Aan hem schreven de Thraciërs al hun wijsheid toe, die de vorm had van allerlei bezweringen, wapendansen en rituelen, waarmee de deelnemers zouden kunnen delen in de onsterfelijkheid van de goden. Een mooi voorbeeld is de man die begraven is met de cocon van een rups. Bij die rituelen zou het draaien om een cyclisch proces van leven, sterven en herleven, wat in de kunst tot uiting zou worden gebracht door herhaalde motieven (meanders, spiralen…) en ook een steeds herhaalde afwisseling van kleuren: rood voor het sterven, zwart voor het graf en wit voor de hernieuwing.
En goud! Goud representeerde al sinds de Bronstijd de zon, de bron van alle leven. Archeologen maken – volgens mij terecht – heel veel van de associatie tussen zonneschijn en goudglans, maar ik noteer wel dat Herodotos geen zonnegod vermeldt dat alleen de hellenistische – dus: vrij late – auteur Alexandros Polyhistor beweert dat de Thraciërs Dionysos/Zagreus gelijkstelden aan de zonnegod.

Een van de opvallendste afbeeldingen uit de Thracische kunst staat bekend als de Thracische Ruiter. Er moeten er honderden zijn, misschien wel duizenden. Steeds zien we een bewapende ruiter, die nu eens op jacht is en bijvoorbeeld een everzwijn achtervolgt, dan weer een slang bij een boom aanvalt, of terugkeert van het front met het hoofd van een verslagen tegenstander in z’n bagage. Zo nu en dan draagt hij een hoorn des overvloeds, wat dan wellicht het symbool is van de onderwereld. Reliëfs als deze zijn ook bekend uit Roemenië, en daaruit kennen we de naam van de Thracische Ruiter: Ἥρως, “Heros”. Dat is overigens ook het Griekse woord voor held, dus het kan ook een titel zijn, of een als eigennaam gebruikte titel.
In de diverse gebieden lijkt de Thracische Ruiter met diverse goden of mythologische figuren te zijn geassocieerd: de Griekse genezende godheid Asklepios, de orakelgod Apollo, Dionysos/Zagreus, en wellicht ook Ares. Die is immers (volgens Herodotos althans) belangrijk geweest, past goed bij de bewapende ruiter en is niet ergens te plaatsen. Afbeeldingen zijn er tot ver in de derde eeuw na Chr. en wellicht is er een verband met de dubbele “ruiters van de Donau” waarover ik eerder blogde.
En misschien is de Thracische Ruiter ook wel een weergave van de oppergod. Herodotos noemt Zalmoxis, waarvan hij zegt dat die ook wel Gebeleïzis heet. Die laatste naam wordt ook anders gespeld, maar het gaat zeker om dezelfde Indo-Europese naam als die waarvan Zeus en Jupiter zijn afgeleid: de donderende hemelgod die aan het hoofd van het pantheon stond. Dat Zalmoxis in de hemel verbleef, blijkt uit (alweer) Herodotos, die vertelt dat de Geten
om de vier jaar een man uitloten die aan Zalmoxis al hun wensen en verlangens van dat tijdstip kenbaar moet maken. Dat gaat als volgt in zijn werk: zij wijzen een aantal mannen aan die ieder drie speren vasthouden. Dan wordt door een groep anderen de persoon die de boodschap aan Zalmoxis moet overbrengen aan handen en voeten beetgepakt en in de lucht gegooid zodat hij op de speerpunten terechtkomt. Komt hij bij die val om, dan betekent dit volgens hen dat de god hun welgezind is.noot Herodotos, Historiën 4.94; vert. Hein van Dolen.
Of dit werkelijk zo is gegaan, waag ik te betwijfelen. Het past me net iets te goed bij Herodotos’ tendens om de Thracische barbarij wat aan te dikken. Maar het bevestigt wel dat Zalmoxis in de hemel was.

✨The dance of the maenads✨
This is one of four reliefs depicting maenads dancing held by the Museo del Prado. The exceptional detail and sense of flowing movement is simply exquisite. These are Roman reinterpretations of Greek reliefs from the fifth century BCE and were designed to honour the maenads’ chosen god, Dionysus. The original reliefs were purported to be crafted by the sculptor Callimachus (ca. 410-400 BCE).
