Tomorrow at 6pm King's College London are holidng a Film: On Human and Machine Intelligence event hosted by the Department of #DigitalHumanites.
The event will showcase two short films that explore #AI, looking at how its machinic logic and technological creativity transform the creation of meaning.
Heidi Stokes’ #film ‘unhIndered AI’ dives into the mechanisms of AI systems to show their peculiarities and mannerisms. The film is a collaboration with Mercedes Bunz.
Joanna Zylinska’s film is an experiment that mobilises a variety of generative AI models to test the boundaries of #human and machine creativity. Taking Chris Marker’s famous apocalyptic photofilm, La Jetée, as a point of departure, it explores alternative counter-apocalyptic scenarios with a #gender twist.
The event concludes with a human-only reception. Humans need to register here to attend.
Unfortunately, for logistical reasons the event is in-person only.

📣 Another big week with 249,904 digitised newspaper articles added to #Trove. Almost half of these (122,908) were from the Sydney Daily Mirror.
Other major changes include:
* Upper Murray and Mitta Herald (Vic) +59,497 articles
* Queanbeyan Age (NSW) +37,310 articles
* Corryong Courier (Vic) +27,243 articlesNew newspapers:
* Northern Planter (Qld, 1907-08)
* South Sydney Sentinel (NSW, 1932-35)See the Trove Newspaper Data Dashboard: https://wragge.github.io/trove-newspaper-totals/ #GLAM #histodons #digitalHumanites #ozHist

Updating my harvest of #Trove list data. There are currently 2,074,371 items saved in 108,751 lists.
Here's a chart showing the number of lists created per month, and a word cloud of list titles. #GLAM #digitalHumanites #histodons

Another undocumented change in v3 of the #Trove API – urls pointing to newspaper articles and pages now use NLA identifiers.
For example, in v2 a link to a page was like this: https://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/page/16636766
In v3 it's like this: https://nla.gov.au/nla.news-page16636766
It's a good change, because the identifiers should be more persistent. But if, like me, you have regexes to extract the numeric ids from page urls, you might find you get unexpected errors! #GLAM #digitalHumanites
-
A long-standing #Trove API bug has been fixed – the /newspaper/titles endpoint no longer includes government gazettes (they have their own endpoint). Looks like I can finally retire the #GLAMWorkbench notebook that documented a workaround. #digitalHumanites

📣 187,475 digitised newspaper articles added to #Trove last week. Interestingly, 62,288 of them were in one newspaper from one year – Sydney's Daily Mirror in 1941 (seems like digitisation has just kicked off). There were also additions to Victorian and SA papers.
Other changes include:
* Queanbeyan Age (NSW) +38,050 articles
* Upper Murray and Mitta Herald (Vic) +26,946 articles
* Port Lincoln Times (SA) 25,768 articlesNew newspapers:
* The Pastoral Times and Deniliquin and Moama Reporter (NSW, 1863)

@quinnanya @tillgrallert @ryancordell The biggest gap in #DigitalHumanites #dh right now isn’t technology, or training, or money, or anything else. It’s community.

COPIM’s Experimental Publishing group is delighted to announce our #ExperimentalBooks online conference, 'Experimental Books – Re-imagining Scholarly Publishing', taking place on the 20/02, 09/03, & 13/03/2023
#OAbooks #OpenAccess #openbooks #openresearch #books #DigitalHumanites #publishing
This three-parts conference - including talks, roundtables, and workshops - will discuss alternative publishing options for the humanities by showcasing some of the experiments that are currently taking place in the realm of academic book publishing. It aims to inspire authors, publishers, technology developers and others, to (continue to) speculate on new collaborative futures for open humanities research and publication. It also aims to discuss how these book experiments could sit within more standardised or established workflows for print and online book production, dissemination, and preservation.

Are deconstruction and new historicism still key interpretative and explanatory frameworks in literary studies today? There are also some that are less than 60 years old, surely? How about, for starters, new materialism, posthumanism, ecocriticism, epistemic justice, electronic literature, perhaps even digital humanities.

I just love how the crowd I was part of on Twitter has started moving here and easily reconnecting. The connections with the people I first connected with on Twitter over 10 years ago appear to be particularly strong. It is bringing back great memories of being part of a small group of people around the world with similar interests, supporting each other.

I’m a scholar of medieval (mainly ~200~1000 CE) Chinese literature and religion at UC Santa Barbara, and have side interests in digital humanities, translation, and world literature. I’ve written a lot about Buddhist poetry in the Tang Dynasty. I also teach Classical Chinese and a bunch of other things here.
