  1. So today's little #DigitalExclusion story is about #Eurostar. I'm taking a Eurostar to Paris tomorrow, and because of all the extra faffing about at passport control thanks to Brexit, I thought I'd better take seriously any recommended time to arrive before my train is due to leave.

Their website says to arrive at the time recommended on your ticket, except that there is no recommended arrival time on the PDF ticket. You can only see that in their app.

  3. "Driverless taxis set to launch in UK as soon as September"

I have no doubt that, once the technology is sufficiently mature, driverless cars will be safer than ones driven by humans. Humans cause a lot of crashes.

I am yet to be convinced that the technology will be sufficiently mature by September, but let's see.

I am also bothered by the built-in #DigitalExclusion. How are you supposed to hail a cab if you don't or can't have the app?

  5. @saxifraga That's dreadful. There must be a great many elderly people who struggle with online bookings.

  7. I think moving NHS services more online is a positive development, as long as there is still an offline version available for people who can't or won't use smartphones or similar technology.

So all the government now needs to do is to build a massive IT system to support it.

  9. "The plans would require anyone starting a new job or renting a home to show the card on a smartphone app"

Does Starmer realise that not everyone has a smartphone?

    #Idiot

If Starmer insists on going ahead with this crazy scheme I suspect it could be his Poll Tax Moment.

  13. I strongly disapprove of companies who provide some kind of service which I could interact with perfectly well online via a web browser, but they try to push me into using their app.

Sure, there are times when a dedicated app is handy, but there are many more times when everything I need could be done perfectly well through a web browser, no app required.

I just came across a particularly egregious example of this from Trading 212.

  15. “Libraries have always been part of this ‘open’ idea… but they don’t quite realise they are also part of tech,” says @saera at @everythingopen “The digital divide is pushing the underprivileged further and further away.” Libraries are a point of connection helping bridge this divide.

  17. 🔹 “Digitalisation processes may lead to more #Inequality. Evidence points out that particular attention should be given to ensuring that vulnerable populations, especially those at risk of #DigitalExclusion, are protected from any negative effects related to accessing (digital) services …”

  18. A flyer for a Belgian politician came to my mailbox with a #Facebook logo in the middle of a QR code to an URL shortener which probably leads to Facebook as well as a TikTok QR code & a gmail.com email address. The website of the PS political party uses Cloudflare to block people from political info. This politician has taken the perfect steps to demo #digitalExclusion & lose my vote.

  19. And just to add insult to injury, the app said that it was proud to offer a "convenient way to pay for parking".

When I run the world, it will be illegal to offer any real-world service where the only way to access it is through a smartphone.

  21. National emergency app now available in Belgium (exclusively to Google & Apple patrons who run closed-source software)

Belgium has adopted an “official” app so that anyone can signal for help, so long as they belong to this exclusive group:... #digitalexclusion #digitaltransformation #forcednonfreesoftware #Brussels

  24. @EU_Commission
Tariff-free roaming on smartphones should be available worldwide to allow people to access navigation, purchase e-tickets, make payments, etc., which helps reduce paper waste. Unfortunately, public #WiFi tends to be limited. My idea helps reduce #digitalexclusion for people visiting different countries around the world; this is also beneficial to #disabled people.

  25. No app, no entry: How the digital world is failing those without tech. The elderly, the poor and the unbanked are among the marginalised groups being excluded from our #cashless society.

  26. It's often said that it's 'just' elderly people who experience digital exclusion. Two things here: a/ 'just' implies that's somehow OK; b/ it's not true. Statistics cited in my evidence on digital exclusion to the House of Lords include: 'Only 41% of people in work in the UK have the full set of digital skills needed for work … further, 8% do not have any of the essential workplace digital skills at all' committees.parliament.uk/writt #DigitalExclusion #DigitalSkills

  28. Digital exclusion of older people needs focus, but coverage of the House of Lords report so far doesn't reflect much of this bit:

'People with disabilities account for a disproportionately large number of internet non-users and are more likely to report lower levels of confidence'
