On my way to #ica23 with a stopover in Reykjavik, Iceland. Left the hot summer in Norway (Yes it is true) to travel north, much colder already. 🥶Starting off with preconference on #digitaldisconnection before presenting on #sustainability in media policy, soft #activism and #postdigital artefacts. Looking forward to meet and learn!

There is a long list of interesting pre- and post-conferences to #ica23, and some are still accepting abstracts. If I was planning to go to Toronto I would be torn between attending these two, both arranged by such nice and smart scholars:
Key themes in disconnection research - deadline Jan 20th

@Chanders @askekammer @ICAHDQ I think examples like this also reflect a key point in the research literature on #DigitalDisconnection, about the ambivalence and mess of trying to leave social media platforms. Even us comm scholars are rarely going to be able to do it in a coherent or clear-cut manner.

CW: Self-promo: Intrusive media, knowledge work
This article was online first last year, but is now also out in an issue of Information, Communication & Society: Faltin Karlsen and I draw on domestication theory and more to analyze how knowledge workers experience digital media as helpful and hindering to creativity and focus. We highlight normative negotiations, boundary work and ambivalence. #DigitalDisconnection #commodon #OpenAccess https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/1369118X.2021.1933561

For people thinking about social media and identity (not just related to current events): Here is a new research article in JCMC analysing how young people's narratives of #DigitalDisconnection align to identity cultivation. By brilliant PhD candidate Mehri S. Agai (whom I am lucky to supervise and work with)

A #commodon #introduction: I am a professor of #mediastudies doing qualitative audience research. With my colleagues in Bergen Media Use Research Group I have studied cross-media use and public connection in Norway. Then projects on #digitaldisconnection, #newsavoidance, #doomscrolling, media and #climatechange. Interested in #algorithms, #datafication and #smartphones, from a user perspective. My new book Media Use in Digital Everyday Life will be published #openaccess by Emerald in 2023.
