  1. DiGiCo introduces the #Quantum225DS, a dual-screen version of its compact console. Designed for live use, it delivers greater flexibility and workflow comfort while remaining powerful and cost-effective.

  2. Finally had the time to fix a broken fader on one of the #DiGiCo #SD12 consoles at work.

As you move the throw of the fader it pulls along a loop of toothed belt. The belt wraps around a gearwheel and solid brass pin on one end, and a plastic fitting on the armature of the motor, with a friction-fit gearwheel at the other.

The tiny plastic gearwheel split and fell off. Rather than spend hundreds on a new fader (and wait for shipping from the uk), a miniscule drop of superglue fixed the split, and another to prevent it coming off the armature.

Cost for fix: 1hr, $1.29 (superglue)

    Great questions!

Favourite consoles are the #DiGiCo #SD7 (digital) and the #Midas #Heritage3000 (analogue). These consoles offer enormous flexibility, catering to almost any workflow for any mix situations.

Digital vs. Analogue? I choose BOTH! They are both great for their own reasons. In my ideal world, as much of the sound source should be as old-timey analogue as it can get - nice mics, tube pre/power amps. Combined with excellent ADCs and distribution technologies such as #dante to move the signal where you need it.

My favourite thing to happen during a show was doing an act called "The Comedic Strippers" - 4 male "chip'n dale" "strippers" - the act included a bit where the music is supposed to stop and a specific time but doesn't, and the actors are all yelling at me to cut the sound but I don't (as planned before hand). They managed to whip the audience up to the point where they were coming back to me demanding I cut the music!

My personal worst was doing a screening of Dirty Harry. I was given a brand new Bluray of the film. I put it in, checked it out, screened it, and only after the film was done did anyone mention the film I screened was NOT Dirty Harry, but rather Dirty Harry II: Magnum Force. No one said a word. For over 2 hours. Turned out there were TWO blurays included in the case - Dirty Harry the OG was hidden behind an advertisement in the case!

  9. Set up for #DialMForMurder - The 4 quadrants of the apocalypse!

    Top left to bottom right:
#WirelessWorkBench - monitors wireless body mics worn by actors.

#QLab - sends #midi cues to our #digico mixer, turning mics on and off as needed.

#compass - monitors the venue PA speakers

#bigtime - an enormous clock with seconds

  14. The other day at work we had a show in who brought along their own very capable sound technician. As I was getting him all set up to run their show in our venue, I showed him how to do some esoteric routing in our #digico console that solved a problem for him.

A little later, I noticed he was running #ReaperDAW for recording the show. He started about tediously adding a track, then clicking through a series of menus to assign the routing, rinse & repeat 40some times.

I said "oh, you're a Reaper fella too, eh?"

"Yeah, it's great and all... but I don't suppose you have any tricks to make this go faster?"

    Boy did I.

I showed him how to add all his tracks at once.
How to arm them all at once.
How to use the Routing Matrix to VERY quickly assign channel routing.
How to quickly name all the tracks.

At the end of 2 minutes, he had his reaper file ready to rock and told me "they should double your salary".

While he's not wrong, it got me thinking about other industry pros who protect all their knowledge like gold charms hanging from their belt. I've encountered them, too.

I DID NOT spend decades suffering, bleeding, failing, learning, succeeding, writing my own rules, etc just to have ALL THAT CRAZY COOL SHIT die with me.

Information is for *everyone* and I personally will trip over myself with excitement for any opportunity to pass it along.

  15. I've been messing around with #inkscape a lot, and WOW is it an impressive piece of software.

It's been a lot of fun learning all the tools and building icons and such. I'm also working on a 2D model of a #digico #sd12 mixing console. Ya know... in case you ever need a detailed SVG of a doap mixer.

  16. One of my all-time favourite features of the #openInternet are #NTP (network time protocol) servers which your internet-connected devices can use to keep in sync with international atomic clocks.

We take this for granted on our smart phones, but some devices can't use NTP out of the box, like the expensive #DiGiCo #sd series audio mixing consoles. It's a PITA to change the time on them, so here's how to hook them up to NTP :)

I love talkin' #consoles, so if there are any topics you'd like to see, let me know below!

  22. Looking for a way to control you #DiGiCo #sd console from #qlab? Want to fire snapshots or macros? Mute and unmute channels? Change fader levels? You can do ALL that and more using #osc!

I've written a quick start guide with resources!

    Happy mixing!

  27. Just in case anyone is ever searching for it, here is a (hopefully nearly) complete list of #OSC commands for #DiGiCo #s and #sd series consoles.

Directly manipulate almost any parametre of your desk via #Qlab, #LinuxShowPlayer or anything else (I use PHP and bash scripts).

  32. I don't often post about #theatre-related stuff, but I really should do more. I get to work with the most talented performers in the world of all disciplines, and have the #privilege of using some pretty incredible #tech.

    I finally had the opportunity to mix a show on a #midas #heritage #HD96 through a #lina #lineArray by #MeyerSound.

This thing is ever more #lasVegas than the #digico and #yamaha desks I'm used to.

It's a pleasure to mix on!
