Again — humanities matter intrinsically, but are of critical importance as we redefine social roles and goals in light of titanic technological, geopolitical, and climatic change. #dighum @[email protected]

Ursula Rosenbichler @[email protected] complains re people trying to fix AI with AI, also a laughable moment from Altman in the opening film as well as a bad thing I've heard in DE. They should read my 2024 blogpost #digHum specifically– Will generative AI be omniscient if we give it enough? No 1/2
2024 BRIEF overview on LLM / "... -
ha ha–Klemens Himpele: "most #dighum harms people worry about do not come from government AI eg addiction, doomscrolling &c this is because WE DO NOT WANT YOUR ATTENTION! We want you DOWN from our website!" This is a GREAT panel, way bleeding edge conversations #digitalisation #govtech #AIEthics

A #dighum #dighum2026 special – I've put all my thoughts about about "hyperscalers" and allegedly US AI in one place.

"Quantifying returns on digital inclusion is not turning people into numbers. It's defending exclusion from the accusation there's no numbers." Sophie Woodville really said something more beautiful, but memory :-/

support high public value uses: eg climate health education
prevent and nitigate harm: bias, opacity, unfair profiling. -- she is in favour of age limits on social media)
ensure fair returns: taxation benefit sharing community return
She's against invidiual level monitisation, selling own data, but need group level ...oops, maybe I'll come back and fix this later., just found it now #dighum -
I was a bit late to hearing Bruce @[email protected] apparently read my slides at #digHum . Also repeating Moshe Vardi from yesterday too. (The utility thing I'm blogging about today because of some "interest" I got yesterday from the iaea.) Ironically, he's saying #genAI makes us all sound the same.

#dighum Rikap #dighum2026
McKinzie & al. are the ultimate complicit actors, pushing everyone into the cloud, changing what states are about, making governments just providers of services, not places where we collectively make decisions. This undermines democracy. #digitalGoverance #AIEthics -
#dighum Rikap: the world's largest companies are extractive monopolies, some of nature directly, others via culture & knowledge.
I loved this because it's not just AI and cloud, but also pharma, consultancies, insurance companies etc. which I'd noticed commonality before but not put this name to it. -
Reminder, look for #dighum to get both versinos of my posts. Apparently there's also a #dighum2026 #tag which like why?? Why don't you want us to access your other dighum efforts too? Besides that it takes more characters! Anyway, @[email protected] gave an awesome keynote, more on that…

#Dighum brings me back to a beautiful building in Vienna, where I was working some years ago as a Senior Scientist on media accountability.
Do yourself a favour and check out the beautiful garden of Austrias Academy of Science #öaw for lunch break.

OK, I've bounced to the third track. The speaker is trying to turn the conversation from public interest to public value which is actually more genius than it seems at first blush – let's quantify how we redistribute, not just say there's "interest" #dighum

#dighum Chowhurdy #digitalGovernance #AIRegulation
In the US IVOs are being mandated by states – independent verification organisations. No clear pathway to economic viability for IVOs, she calls for #AIAuditing to become boring.
Her final slide: Can you prove it?
In q&a she seems to be critiquing plurality in regulation, and justifies it with the google(r's, actually) moat leak, since GAFAM+ then tried to create political moats.
https://newsletter.semianalysis.com/p/google-we-have-no-moat-and-neither -
Chowdhury – AI vendors right now only promise speed & efficiency, never quality. She is pushing for "structured auditing." She calls for #accountability #infrastructure. (I still hear her Accenture employee in how she presents & pushes her services, though it's super good to know. #dighum #AIAudits

I put bunch of Chowhurdy on my main account, follow both or the #tag #dighum #AIEthics
She does a great job of talking about everything practical you need to do that hardly anyone does. I'm not great at these kinds of points because I don't want to know people can't see this. Like the 1st point here on how "messed up" it is to have e.g. recent employees [presumably huge stock holders] be the new "independent" evaluator. Use the same standards as nuclear or even academia for independence!

#dighum @[email protected] complains about ppl reiterating work over the decade she's been in #AIEthics. Not only have I been here since the 1990s, I'm reading now about similar harms from new comms tech in 1840s & 1920s. (Yet someone complained to me this week about needing to know about 2024!)

A first speaker: Alex Stockberger
Technopolitics timeline of the "information society": they start it at the financial crisis of 2007 (! well, Austria's a big finace place...) Oh, no OK, that's when they started doing it, but they go back arbitrarily (his own term) at 1900. Edit & change, done in HK & California as well as European capitals.
They didn't like the term information society but wanted something freeing. Can make edits on postits.

The Digital Humanism Conference 24-26 June 2026 in the ÖAW, Vienna. On the evening of Wednesday, 24 June, we’re opening the conference with a screening of Valerie Veatch’s (who was there) documentary Ghost in the Machine (2026) at Gartenbaukino. It was **great** but it was a little scary that they confound the eugenics and "evolutionists."
Christiana Wendehorst does a great intro to the ÖAW: they are a learned society, the largest non-university R&D in AT, & a funder.

AT acad of sci ÖAW.
Sadly, DE broke #eduroam — to defeat bot-in-the-middle attacks they’ve created one.
Btw I didn’t take a wrong turn last night, after a glass of water in the hof, my hotel was right outside! I just can’t bypass art.
