  1. Wicked Witch of the West

Producer Mervyn Leroy's original idea for casting the Wicked Witch for The Wizard of Oz was inspired by Disney's adaption of Snow White - he wanted to make her slinky + seductive. He thought he'd found the perfect choice with actress Gale Sondergaard who'd won an Oscar the previous year for her Best Supporting Actress performance in his film Anthony Adverse.
Others however disagreed, thinking witches should be ugly. They attempted to give Sondergaard 'The Ugly Treatment' with make-up, but the actress herself decided she no longer wanted the role.

"In those days I was not about to make myself ugly! I have no regrets".

Interview, 1980 with Dick Cavett when she was 81

  6. @PDFlynn @FrankFrank
And I have to mention #DickCavett doing his anagram routine on TV with a live audience (absolute genius at anagrams), somebody in the audience offered up "Spiro Agnew", which Cavett instanteously rearranged into "Grow a penis".

  7. If you’re a #geezer like me, you, too, may be interested in the #DecadesTV reruns of old #DickCavett shows. Tonight’s lineup, from 1972: Paddy Chayevsky, Allan Ginsburg, and Christopher Isherwood.

  8. @tuckerteague

The fun but testy sit-around at 22 minutes is so telling...they are positioned as children at his campfire :blobnom:
    ...#DickCavett does #Woodstock

  9. The day after #Woodstock

A rather incredible video that I've never seen before. #TheJeffersonAirplane, #StephenStills (with Woodstock mud still on his pants), #DavidCrosby, #JoniMitchell (who sadly did not make it to Woodstock), and an audience of attendees, on The #DickCavett show, the day after the Woodstock #music festival ended. Amazing piece of cultural #history. Plus commercials from the period.

  10. I had a nice 30+ minute chat this morning with Robert Bader to discuss the upcoming Groucho and Cavett documentary airing December 27 nationwide on PBS.
